if you have all the latest drivers and latest quicktime,
I guess you are editing in a sequence set to YUV codec
and you have turned on ‘overlays’ in the FCP canvas:

it seems that FCP superimposes canvas overlays (like wireframe & TC) in RGB
which leads to color/level shifts when the video pauses (and the overlays are shown).

so this is big issue to get rid off in FCP6 ! please

[Juan Salvo] “We use a multibridge to feed 8 channel aes/ebu into our tascam dsm7.1 which handles our monitoring control. I think it’s the only solution available for what you’d like to do… all together this will run you about 3400 bucks”

thank you all for your input.

at the moment for me this issue is not worth that amount of money.
though I allready have set up 5.1 amp & speakers and use it to test encoded/burned dvd’s
the need to monitor 5.1 from FCP directly is only about 4-6 times a year.
++ I have found a cheaper ‘workaround’ to get pci-audio-playback in sync with decklink video:
just select all audio in the timeline and press [+][4] buttons
after finshed monitoring just move audio the reverse way.

now I will write to Apple the wish to get independent audio/video delay settings built into FCP.
for the moment situation is a bit bizarr: audio/video can be routed to different hardware but there is only one delay setting for both of them.

thank you nico for your answers, but:

    1) I am not produceing 5.1 in FCP, but very often I have to import the 6 channels I am getting from sound studios and align it in sync to video, for mastering and/or for going to DVD later. so I just need monitoring of at least 6 simultanous audio channels right from FCP as I do with allready encoded 5.1 sound from dvd-test burns via AV-receiver.

    2) concerning your suggestion: I guess that sound from an extra PCI-card will not be in sync to the video output of the Decklink card – so it doesnt seem to be an option or it would need adjustable audio delay.
the right way would be to deembed audio from decklinks HD/SDI and D->A-convert the extracted channels.

    thank you Luke,

I found that disconnecting/reconnecting my Dr.Bott ADC-Extension cable solved the problem.
the problem just occured at the same moment I installed HDLINK driver but was in no way related to this installation.

    regards,

November 18, 2005 at 6:27 pm in reply to: Decklink Video Delay?

there is a need to get an audio- brother/sister to the HDLINK
    to deembed audio from (HD)-SDI.
the decklink HDproDual has way to less audio monitoring capabilities.

    wishlist:
    HDSDI=SDI in
HDSDI loop through (to go to HD(SDI) monitor or HDLINK)
    4x SPDIF/AES-EBU out (=8 channels)
    8x analog out
    max price = HDLinks’s

or, are there any other ideas to get frame acurate 7.1 audio monitoring at reasonable price? (except multibridge estreme)

[Michelle De Long] “Well the strange thing is that the only effects being used are not plugins but effects that come with Final Cut”

nearly all original FCP effects you find under menu ‘video filter’ are plugins, but they are stored inside FCP

concerning harddisk: I would stop working with immediately and try to make a 1:1 copy of it to a new disk.
quit FCP – copy whole disk to new one – give new disk same name as old one – disconnect old disk – restart FCP.

    good luck,

it seems that you have faced a bug in one of the plugins you are using
which might be beyond your skills to repair.

try to deactivate one of the plugins to see if the clip does finish rendering without error.
when you have found the plugin makeing troubles
hopefully you will find another soulution to get what you want.

and please report back the name of the beast.

    good luck,

[Shane Ross] “No color correction is done during the development process. They can do some things like push the processing or pull the processing to get a desired look on the negative, but major CC is done while editing.”

yes, no major cc is done on film for video2film transfers
but minor for shure (1-2/3 point +/-)
    or in other words:
it’s very seldom that a print from neg->pos is done without switching the light (one light print)

[jose alfonzo] “But in this show, the clips look “all funky”, basically, not real at all, they look colorized. So, my question is: what is legal in the vectorscope???”

if you want to avoid getting crazy with this difficult task
try my ‘mastering’ plugin – just drop it onto the whole (nested) sequence with it’s default settings.
see documentation & demo at https://www.1z1.at/plugins/

but be aware, that it’s likely that your very colorized footage will loose colors in areas
that are very bright and heavy saturated at the same time.
    keep in mind: 100%red + 100%green + 100%blue = 100%white (which has no saturation per definition!!!)

    good luck,

[marko d] “BTW which company in EUROPE and US(for the transfer) would You suggest?”

    europe:
said to be the best: swiss effects zuerich, http://www.swisseffects.ch
good and cheaper: cinepix berlin/munich, http://www.cinepix.de
    here in austria:
    http://www.synchrofilm.com
    http://www.listo.at

be aware that in a technical point of view “best” may not bring the result you like best.
because transfering a tape technically as good as possible, which is not prepared properly for this transfer, will result in a print that shows the same insufficiency as the source tape.
to make confusion perfect, there are two different versions of ‘perfect’, depending on the company:
    – eliminate all uncertainties by using color management etc. to get a print that looks exactly like the video source
    – work with uncertainties, don’t be too perfect…. and so on…. to get as much film look as possible
so it depends what you want, tests are essential and you have to go to the company more than once – just sending a tape and waiting for the print usually dont works.
