Your best bet is to contact a post facility with tape>film capabilities. Preferrably the company that will be doing the transfer. They can provide the best information.

    calculation:
    – be prepared to do some 1-2min. tests to bring your material from tape to 35mm
    – do at least one test before shooting, use same camera/workflow

    shooting:
    – avoid overexposed whites
    – trash every shot without perfect focusing, avoid moving cam with autofocus set to on
    – if possible, shoot 25p @ 1/50 sec, 1/50 also if shooting interlaced
    – swtich ‘detail’ of camera to OFF! to avoid doubled lines from contrast enhancing
    – don’t use cheap optics!
    – digibeta is prefered. though DV etc. works but needs lots more post processing (color upsampling etc)
    – is your DOP experienced in this field?

    post production:
    – check focus on all shots with high resolution monitor and with good video projector
    – for tape2film, super blacks and super whites usually are no problem (ask transfer company), so dont make the tape for transfer broadcast safe to avoid loosing details
    – get someone experienced for color correction, most important issue here is to have true blacks and whites without color because: there will be some additional color timing from 35neg->35pos and your blacks suddenly could show some color that allready was in the video but barely visible there.

!!! make tests!! this will also make you familiar with the people at the company doing the transfer – they usually can give you lots of experienced feedback.

    good luck,
    kurt

    thank You for the info

“- check focus on all shots with high resolution monitor and with good video projector”
I was planing to colorcorrect it on 23 inch apple cinema display…but i never trusted those for tv correction so i use to do it on sony pro monitors…since 35 is the different issue i thought to do it on 23 inch apple cinema disp. and double check it on HD sony video projector…hmm

BTW which company in EUROPE and US(for the transfer) would You suggest?

[marko d] “BTW which company in EUROPE and US(for the transfer) would You suggest?”

    europe:
said to be the best: swiss effects zuerich, http://www.swisseffects.ch
good and cheaper: cinepix berlin/munich, http://www.cinepix.de
    here in austria:
    http://www.synchrofilm.com
    http://www.listo.at

be aware that in a technical point of view “best” may not bring the result you like best.
because transfering a tape technically as good as possible, which is not prepared properly for this transfer, will result in a print that shows the same insufficiency as the source tape.
to make confusion perfect, there are two different versions of ‘perfect’, depending on the company:
    – eliminate all uncertainties by using color management etc. to get a print that looks exactly like the video source
    – work with uncertainties, don’t be too perfect…. and so on…. to get as much film look as possible
so it depends what you want, tests are essential and you have to go to the company more than once – just sending a tape and waiting for the print usually dont works.

    thanks
and that was what i was thinking to do…
“work with uncertainties, don’t be too perfect…. and so on…. to get as much film look as possible”
…yet i dont think that ill have to do something like “bleach bypas”(or any other hard changes in picture) when i collor correct it
it should be done in the developing process or am i wrong on this…

Any color correction is done during the “online” phase. No color correction is done during the development process. They can do some things like push the processing or pull the processing to get a desired look on the negative, but major CC is done while editing.

yes, no major cc is done on film for video2film transfers
but minor for shure (1-2/3 point +/-)
    or in other words:
it’s very seldom that a print from neg->pos is done without switching the light (one light print)

He asked if it happened during the development phase, which it doesn’t. It does happen, however, when you lock your final cut and either CC inside your Online edit system (NLE) or tape to tape or negative cut to internegative (Davinci) or on your DI (Digital Intermediate).
