Key shortcut cmnd+k will add an edit at the playhead for all active tracks. I have mine mapped to cmnd+v because that is what i have been using for eternity.

Hi Ryan,
I hear this question all the time, and the simple answer is that computer monitors will not show you interlaced footage correctly. Hence the need for an external broadcast monitor.
A good example is the one you stated in the post while another would be your fields being reversed. Monitoring on a computer monitor is never going to show you any issues that might come up while working with an interlaced source.

Okay, you have confirmed that the transition is behaving normally. What else were you expecting it to do? If you have no video on the timeline, the default image (or lack of one) is black. If you place a transition and the end of a clip with no visible video after or underneath the transition, you will end up with a black image. If you would like a color, then create a color matte (or video clip) as stated by Ann and place cut it in where you need.
If that is not what you are trying to get at then I am still confused. It might help to post a screenshot of a portion of your sequence with the transition applied so we can take a look at what you are trying to explain.

Sorry, I have to ask? Why would you want to change your sequence setting mid edit? Might be able to help with an alternate workflow solution if we knew why this was a necessity.

I think the question has been answered as we are understanding it, but it sounds like the OP might be asking something else.
Dave, if you have a clip and split it in the middle, then apply the dip to white transition. Does the transition go to white and then back to video, or white to black and then video?

Okay, then forget about using Dip to white. You will have to cut it old school like we did before we had fancy presets.
Make a cut in the clip where you would like your fade to white to start. The apply a levels filter and keyframe the filter from normal at the start of the cut to full white and the end.

Learn what you can in the time and access you have. Mark is spot on about not needing great chops on any specific NLE. The most important aspects in being competitive are knowing how to tell a good story, How to balance your checkbook and P & L sheets. Being able to think outside of the “Edit” box and creatively find ways to stay profitable when there is little work.
It’s not about how fast you can Cut, but rather how well you can communicate.
