  • I would believe all of them as the data size is calculated by the actual size of the file. The est. file size from Media encoder is just that and you will always want to make sure you leave headroom for the authoring process. I cant comment on the actual workflow because I dont do much authoring anymore and hardly ever touch Encore or Blu Ray.

What Codec are you transcoding to for Blu Ray authoring and are you setting your audio to dolby instead of PCM?

  • none taken, It all depends on how well you want the transcoded footage to look and how much time you have to get there. Premiere Pro will handle XDCam footage natively if you have a recent, within a few years, and if you are in CS5.5 or above you will be able to work with both H.264 and XDCam in the same timeline.

It sounds like the XDCam transfer did not wrap the clips correctly. can you open the files in AME?

your pixel aspect ratio should be set to square 1.0 (like your source), unless .9 is a deliverable requirement. Also HD fields are almost always upper. To help speed things up, just take a 2 second region to test out your compression settings.

It would help if you could share the deliverable specs.

  • You will have to transcode.. no other way around it that I know of. And While you are at it dont bother transcoding to H.264. It is not really an editing codec and its compression algorithm produces a very randomized (data) final product that does not re-compress well. Your best bet would be to transcode to another less compressed editing friendly codec. Just because PrPro can read it does not mean you should use it.

I might have missed it, but what is your source footage and workflow?

  • “Edit” Is your footage suffering from Jittery (jaggy) looking video? Like bad compression artifacts or Jittery as in stuttering playback?

Export your stabilized clips for editing in PrPro as animation or some other less lossless codec than AVI, and think about upgrading to CS6.

I am not sure why you are “changing to square pixel” the pixel aspect ratio should already be 1.0 (square) SD analog video has a pixels aspect of 0.9 (non-square) Your footage from the DSLR should already have a 1.0 Pixel aspect ratio.

I believe that it works like this (Someone else may need to confirm as I am not in the application at the moment) Bring all clips into your timeline Mixed framerates and mixed formats, the Mercury playback engine does the heavy preprocessing so you can view your content, then conform on output through AME for your final file.

David, we are all trying to help. If we are not providing answers that are not helping we probably do have enough information about your specific issue to do so. I realize that you are new (as a lot of folks are here) to PrPro so if we give an answer that is not understood please be forthright and ask the poster what they mean. It will only lead to a better understanding of the tools you are using and leave you a lot less frustrated.

Some useful information to know would be your system specs, format of your footage, timeline format ect.

YOu should also look at this book, as it is one of the best resources available on the software as well as go through some of the tutorials here on the COW. https://www.peachpit.com/store/editors-guide-to-adobe-premiere-pro-9780321840066

Hi David, are you using CS6 and if so what are your fractional resolution playback settings?

  • My first question is why are you trying to edit in a 1440 timeline. This is technically HD and is what sony HDV uses for a frame size, however it is not a deliverable resolution. My suggestion would be to cut the DSLR footage natively and the AME handle any scaling for your output.

I might be misunderstanding your post but i am guessing that you are trying to make a PAL DVD, so if you could give more specific details, it would be helpful. If so you will not need to upscale anything because a PAL DVD will have a final resolution no larger than SD video.
