It mentions in the demo on their site that the first clip you bring down dictates what the timeline codec will natively be.

Will the new box ONLY support the Pro422 codec or can it send a signal with another codec such as DVCProHD or SD uncompressed?
Thanks!

Correct. The Kona 3 requires a card and is therefore much more free to using any codec that FCP supports. The IO HD is getting the signal to your computer via FW800. So it needs to compress before it sends the signal…thus the hardware-based Pro422 codec. The biggest difference that this makes is that the IO HD can be used in the field with a laptop and without any RAID or anything…to get great looking HD material.
I can’t wait to hear more about how good the Pro422 is versus DVCProHD, which we currently use for everything. I’m very happy with DVCProHD, but if Pro422 is better quality or even smaller file sizes, I’m all for it!

I’m guessing here, but I don’t think the other Kona products need to do this. I think the IO HD needs to compress realtime FIRST because then the signal is traveling down FW800. With a dedicated card, the bandwidth would be fine to do uncompressed until software…then pick your codec like you do now, only pick the Pro422, if desired.
Not sure I’m correct on this, but it makes sense. AJA will have to release additional support for the Codec, but I would think this is going to happen.

Not really. Not since the new Tower was announced without either of them in there. I think Apple is happy to wait this one out for a while, especially if they can get the AppleTV in everyone’s living rooms.
I’ve done tests on it and the AppleTV codec is great. If they add just a few more features (loop video track for one), it will be a very hot device. You will see about 100 of them at tradeshows hooked up to Plasma screens in every booth and in the lobby’s of many companies. Shoot, I’ll buy one for the client if they do their project in HD. At $299, it would be easy to justify this expense. BUT, we’re a few tricks away still. Hopefully in 1.5! 🙂

This is exactly what I was thining about this cool box: a field solution to capture DVCProHD-like quality straight in from HD SDI cameras like the Canon H1 that we use. It would be great to stay out of HDV altogether.
Note it’s not a truly portable solution, as it doesn’t do batteries.
Now, I wonder how we can integegrate this with a Firestore device or a harddrive that can handle the Pro422. (besides a Macbook Pro…still not keen on dealing with a laptop to record.)
This opens a lot of ideas…

April 16, 2007 at 12:49 am in reply to: FCP 6 disappointment – same old media/capture toolAh, good to know. I may have jumped a little as it looked identical in their demo.
Walter, I’m pretty sure our places are about the same size. I haven’t quite wrapped my arms around Final Cut Server yet. Is this something you think you’ll use/need? Besides storing demo clips and frequent graphics, what else can this be used for? Judging from the 1 page info it has on the site, it definitely looks like it’s aimed more towards news, but tell me if I’m wrong.

April 16, 2007 at 12:26 am in reply to: FCP 6 disappointment – same old media/capture toolDon’t get me wrong…I’m very excited about the new features! I just wish they would go back and address the ones that AVID still has a leg up on. I’m so sick of hearing from AVID guys (and agreeing with them) about how much better Media Management and the Capture Tool is. I’ve been telling them for 6 months…”wait until NAB.” So, I was a bit disappointed that it looks like the same Media Manager. Walter, has it been updated? It didn’t seem like it had from the website, but I would LOVE to be wrong.
Most of the new features weren’t surprising, so pardon the lack of real excitement on my part. Obviously, if you thought about it, we all expected a “Color” type of program and a “Media Server” type app if you’ve followed Apple’s purchases recently. Everyone knew resolution/framerates living together on one timeline was coming, too. I will say they surprised me with how quickly they’ve integerated these into FCS2 and without charging more. Thank you, Apple!
Don’t take my disappointment in a couple non-updates as a general disappointment. I’ve already ordered 4 upgrades and look forward to receiving them.

Walter, unless I’m wrong, the codec is built into the box.
“Io HD is the only device in the world that supports Apple

Yes, the Kona3 can do uncompressed. This box cannot. It is firewire based so it must have a pretty decent compression to go real-time, from what I gather. I think that is why the new codec is built into the box.
What I do not know, is can it feed other codecs like DVC Pro HD through it? It seems not, as of now…
