Clarifying the Diff Between Kona 3 and IO HD
Im going to be asking Aja tomorrow to clarify the diff between Kona 3 and IO HD. I get the feeling the IO HD is really designed to optimize the use of the Pro rez 422 codec in the aquisition and master of anyHD or SD source (since it bases all processes through its Firewire 800 port). Where Kona 3 seems more diverse and not dedicated tothe Prorez 422 way of doing things. This question will be cleared up tomorrow.

Correct. The Kona 3 requires a card and is therefore much more free to using any codec that FCP supports. The IO HD is getting the signal to your computer via FW800. So it needs to compress before it sends the signal…thus the hardware-based Pro422 codec. The biggest difference that this makes is that the IO HD can be used in the field with a laptop and without any RAID or anything…to get great looking HD material.
I can’t wait to hear more about how good the Pro422 is versus DVCProHD, which we currently use for everything. I’m very happy with DVCProHD, but if Pro422 is better quality or even smaller file sizes, I’m all for it!

Can’t really tell if they are positioning this as an offline or a true online finishing codec. It sounded like it was supposed to be a finishing codec but others felt it was an offline codec.

If you look down below at the thread on Io HD, the Sales Dept. did jump in and say this box is based on a compressed HD workflow whereas the Kona 3 can operate all the way to a 2K based workflow.
