Where are you in Costa Rica? I would think that San Jose or Liberia would have a facility.

One suggestion would be to try and contact one of the videographers that work at a tourist attractions. I remember in La Fortuna, a guy who was taping (probably miniDV) and then creating DVDs for the tourist. They might not have the equipment you’re looking for, but could provide a good lead on someone who does.

Thanks for your response Thax. Mostly, I was looking for a name to my problem and now I know it has to be a “ground-loop” problem.
There seems to be a couple of different solutions to my problem. Now I have more quesstions:

Will getting a hum-bucker solve the problem or just hide it? Should I have an electrician come in and try to fix the grounding? Could other machines be effected by the problem and we’re just not seeing it?

I found a very good article on all of this:

March 27, 2006 at 10:03 pm in reply to: Archiving VHS. Please help.

Yes. I want it to be editable so that 20 years from now for my nephew’s wedding, I can make an embarrassing montage of him picking his nose. If I burn it to DVD, I’d really be compressing it and the quality won’t be there.

I think I’m going to go with the Digital Master DVCAM. If that format starts to become obsolete, I’ll just have to convert it when that time comes.

Any suggestions on storing the tapes? Cool dark place and vertically stacked, right?

Being a convert from Avid, I guess I’m used to the “fade to black” option that is there. Seems like a pretty standard thing that should be a 1-step process. Thanks for the advice.

    February 10, 2006 at 4:41 pm in reply to: 10bit or 8bit

Drive space really isn’t the issue. We have an Xraid with tons of space. I was curious as to whether render times and playback sync would improve going to 8 bit, but that the quality would not be sacraficed to a great degree. Also, I like to backup my effects .movs to disc, so 8bit would require less disks and burning. correct?

I guess I want to know how big of a difference is there between 8bit amd 10bit and whether it would be noticable to the average joe.

    Thanks for your input.

It is interlaced video. So I interpret it that way in AE, and I export it that way back to FCP.
Not sure what I’m missing there.

January 28, 2006 at 8:22 pm in reply to: Missing My Markers

    Anyone noticed this problem before?

Let me explain what happened again.

We had four 30 min clips of talking heads. I first went through and made a marker at the start of each new speaker, about 5 per clip. Then, we expanded each master clip and double-clicked on the marker icon in the bin. This opened up just that section of the master clip. FCP allowed us to add markers to these subclips and my producer spent a long time going through each one, making numerous markers and notes. But when you leave that subclip and then come back, all of the submarkers are gone.

Should we have made each speaker into an actual master clip and then add markers?
I don’t understand why FCP would let you make this markers, if they aren’t going to save. Seems like a overlooked bug.

Please let me know if you’ve encountered this or have a workaround or a way to recover 3 hours worth of notes.

    Thanks

December 28, 2005 at 8:20 pm in reply to: OpenGL render error?!?!!? Help

Just to get the project done, I removed the OpenGL plugin from the plugin folder and was able to work again. Should I try to place it back into the plugin folder before doing my final render, or will it be okay to render without OGL turned on? What I want to really figure out is what is “wrong with it in the first place?”.

    Thanks

  • Thanks for the quick replies. I think I’m going with the 1 project with the bins inside of bins inside of bins inside of….
and then clearing it out every couple of months. Maybe even keep a “empty” project template and duplicate it every month to start fresh. I’ll see how it goes.

    Quick aside…

Walter, thank you for your presence on the Cow Forums. You don’t realize how often I’ve benefitted from the knowledge you’ve passed along. I hope you never get tired of answering stupid questions. 🙂
