  • Make fading to black an easier process

Posted by Kevin Reiner on February 28, 2006 at 5:57 pm

We often have several layers of video that we need to fade to black as one element. To achieve this we put in a slug over the end of it and dissolve. It is becoming a tedious step in the process that I would like to make more simple. Is there a way in FCP to save such a thing as a favorite or any other workaround that will help. Anyone?

I just remember it being much simpler in Avid, and would like to find a similar solution.

    Thanks,

Put a slug on the topmost video track (above all others) and dissolve to it, what’s hard about that? The alternative is to keyframe opacity for each video track down to 0, but that can get messy. A slug fade is fast and easy. What part do you find tedious? Maybe I can help you find a faster way.

What about Dip to color and choose black.

I like to do it this way.

Put the read head at the head or tail of a clip.
With the shift key held down push the arrow key on the keyboard so the read head goes one second into the clip.
Use the razor blade tool to slice the clip.

    Now,

do a fade in or out with the rubber bands, going the full length of the one second clip.
Select that one second clip and save as a favored.

Now when editing, just go one second into the clip and slice it and drag the favored, it works for me as a quick solution.

That’s exactly the way I do it.

Make it a nested edit amd throw a dissolve on the end. Clean and simple.

Being a convert from Avid, I guess I’m used to the “fade to black” option that is there. Seems like a pretty standard thing that should be a 1-step process. Thanks for the advice.
