In the Effect Controls tab, change the Anchor Point to be centered on your subject. Reposition the shot to be centered. Keyframe Scale and your subject will zoom to the subject. That’s how you do it!
In After Effects, you do not need to reposition the shot, so that is an advantage there.

I believe pixel aspect ratio was corrected after CS2, perhaps that accounts for the difference you see? Can you place the sequence using a standard size preset and see if it might correct your problem? You can crop the letterbox on output in Media Encoder.

I would take the playback resolution to 50% and see if you get improved performance. Right click on your Program monitor and choose something lower from shortcut menu.
MacBook Pros do not come with a NVIDIA video card capable of providing better performance with CUDA enabled effects, unfortunately. You have the ATI card, likely.

Hi Michael,
We are not working on making Premiere Pro to be more like FCP or Avid, but we are making changes based upon what editors really want and need. That might even be a feature request that doesn’t exist in either of these products.Regarding feature requests that are hard to explain, I agree, there should be a way to upload an image or movie describing your problem. I’ll see what I can do to have them add the feature to the feature request page. That’s pretty cool anyway, making a feature request for the feature request page!
Though I can’t comment on what’s coming in the next version of Premiere Pro, I think you will be very pleasantly surprised.
