Basically, it is a “fail safe” for any color correction you may have missed. Go through primary color correction while minding your scopes and using the Color Corrector 3 Way. The Image overlays for excess luma and excess chroma in the View menu will get you into the zone. When adjusting Luma, you should see a tiny arrow pointing upward next to the check mark for 90-100 IRE. That’s just where you want to be. Chroma can be adjusted similarly using the Vectorscope and the Sat slider of the Color Corrector.
After you’ve gotten it into broadcast safe range using color correction for every clip in your sequence, the workflow is to nest the sequence first–and then drop the filter onto the nest as a “fail safe” incase there were any undetected frames of excess luma or chroma. Option+double click the nest and then click on the Filters tab to adjust the Broadcast safe settings.Hopefully, that gives you on the workflow as I understand it. Anyone else use it differently?

No, you can’t do Animatte like masks within FCP, there are only rough garbage mattes (8point) and shape mattes. Plug-ins are OK, but not as nice as Animatte. Motion has nice matte making ability, and that plugs right into FCP.

I don’t advise remapping your FCP keyboard to resemble Avids, it will only lengthen your learning curve. Avid is not FCP, they work differently–so it pays to have the FCP mindset from the get go. This advice coming from someone that knows both platforms.

I’m going to try that when I get home. I think that T mode only works one way in G3’s–and it’s not the way I need….
I’ll report back.

I have a step by step article I wrote for Ken Stone.

This process is also covered in my book in detail and has exercises to boot.

I get the OS X start up screen, and the machine begins to boot to the finder, but hangs at “Log In Window Starting”. I’ve tried Single User Mode booting and booting with Open Framework (O + F), still no dice….
