I’ve never been too impressed with the chroma keyer filter in FCP. I just never seem to get that “nice” key from it. I’ve been using DVMatte for about a year with good success. It’s not too expensive and easy to use. Might want to try it. They used to have a free, downloadable version to try it out.

Otherwise, for your problem, you might try adding the matte choker filter after the CK filter and try to “squeeze” your keyed material down a little. It might help get rid of the green fringe a bit. Add the spill suppressor filter as well. Try adding the spill filter before the choker and see if that helps. Play with the various controls until you get a combination that works best for your particular situation.

Personally, I’ve been able to execute excellent Keys in FCP on DV, so I don’t know what all the fuss is about.

But anyway, I also found that using the keyer in Boris BCC can also be a great tool.

That’s a MUCH better keyer than Apple’s own Chroma Keyer. In fact I tell everyone that BCC should be on every editor’s workstation as it’s a nice “swiss army knife” of filters, effects and tools.

I have a step by step article I wrote for Ken Stone.

This process is also covered in my book in detail and has exercises to boot.
