“Login Window Starting” freeze-up
Posted by Kevin Monahan on April 18, 2005 at 1:26 amHi All,
Just installed 10.3.9 via software update into a G3 Yosemite 400 mHz with 768 RAM. I am now getting a freeze on start up at the point where the “Login Window Starting” warning comes up. I’ve zapped PRAM, done fsck -y, etc., but I can’t seem to boot up. I’ve tried to start up in Safe User mode, and have tried to boot up on a 10.3 OS X disk by holding the C key down, but is, in fact, ignoring my commands. Any ideas on how to fix this?Kevin Monahan

April 18, 2005 at 4:47 pmThanks. Well, I need to be able to reboot off my OS X CD (yes, it’s a CD since the G3 only has a CD). OS X is ignoring every keyboard boot up command. I’d hate to have to junk the G3 for this stupid reason….
Can anyone help a brother out?

April 18, 2005 at 5:40 pmDid you Repair Permissions before and after the update? Did you update with the 10.3.9 combo?
=====
BTW, don’t ever rush with update – if there’s no need for that. wait couple weeks to see/hear about bugs and problems…

April 19, 2005 at 5:14 pmI get the OS X start up screen, and the machine begins to boot to the finder, but hangs at “Log In Window Starting”. I’ve tried Single User Mode booting and booting with Open Framework (O + F), still no dice….

April 19, 2005 at 8:22 pmyou’re saying that even with:
Restart the Mac and immediately hold down the Command+Option+O+F keys. This will boot you into open firmware. When it stops, you will be looking at a “>” prompt.
At the prompt, type each of the next three lines(no spaces and no capital letters and without the [press Return]), followed by pressing the Return key:
reset-nvram [press Return]
set-defaults [press Return]
reset-all [press Return]and nothing?

April 21, 2005 at 11:52 pmwell, if nothing is working – and in order to boot your computer: you need an external firewire drive ( and apply the update to the main HD you are trying to fight with)
