Yes, you can customize your keyboard. In fact I know someone who as an avid keyboard that they use with FCP. They customized there keys in FCP to match the avid keyboard. It can be done if you really want to do it.

I don’t advise remapping your FCP keyboard to resemble Avids, it will only lengthen your learning curve. Avid is not FCP, they work differently–so it pays to have the FCP mindset from the get go. This advice coming from someone that knows both platforms.

I agree, I switched to FCP after 8 years on Avid. At first I wanted to use the same keyboard layout as in Avid. But that will only take you longer to learn FCP.

You’ll lose a lot of FCP functionalaity if you map the avid keyboard.

FCP uses tools, which can all be summoned with top-level keystrokes.
    A for arrow,
    R for roll/ripple, etc

also FCP’s keyboard goes deep: it really uses modifiers.

case in point: in and out.

    they’re on i & o, of course,

but REMOVE in/out is OPTION i and OPTION o

GOTO in/out is SHIFT i and SHIFT o

leaving 4 keys free for other things.

if you;re coming from an avid bg, i’d strongly recomend getting a FCP keyboard, or set of key-caps.

    cheers,

Another vote here for NOT trying to mimic an AVID keyboard.

We recently “retrained” 45 former AVID editors onto FCP. Those who chose to “learn” something new rather than “adapt” what they already knew did much better in the long run. Think of it this way… if you jump off the deep end of the pool, you’re definitely gonna learn how to swim. Get the FCP colored keyboard and kiss your AVID goodbye.

In fact I have both in my suite and I conformed my avid keyboard to be more FCP like. Its easier to use and it makes more sense. With Avid the functions are too far apart.

As someone else who knows both platforms, I disagree with this vehemently.

Make the keyboard work for you. If for Kevin, it means leaving it the FCP standard way, great. FOr him, that’s correct. If Avid makes more sense to you, then map it that way. My keyboard set up is different than either, but still set up essentially the same way for either. It works best for me, and that’s what matters.
