Use the Media Manager to create a new offline sequence with the proper settings.
Select the old sequence and CNTRL+click on it to choose “Make Sequence Clips Independent”.
File>Media Manager>Create new offline sequence.

Are you SURE of the bad quality? The fully decoded rendered fx in DV cannot be seen on the computer monitor. You must do the following to see true quality.1) connect a video monitor to the DV deck via S-Video. Leave the monitor and deck powered up at all times (connect speakers from the DV Deck as well and NOT the Mac).
2) put the timeline pop up into SAFE RT
3) ensure that the Preview and Full bars have checks next to them in the Sequence>Render menus
4) make sure all graphics are placed on whole, even numbers on the X,Y axis (check this in the Center parameter of the Motion Tab)

This is for playback only. You’ll need a control surface/mixer to control FCP 5’s audio mixer. At least you now know how to connect it. 🙂

As for the audio monitoring – I have a deck, but it’s actually the Sony GV-D1000 clamshell deck with composite i/o….not a DSR-11 or higher end deck…therefore, yes, I am monitoring out of the computer…
Actually, it’s better to monitor out of the clamshell then the Mac. If you monitor audio from the Mac, it’s being downsampled on the fly from 48 kHz to 44.1 kHz. If you have a video monitor connected, you’ll also have synch issues.
Like 90% of the rest of the FCP nation, you are not monitoring the audio’s true quality by going out of the Mac. Don’t let this be you. If I were you, I’d connect the Mac’s built in audio out and the clamshell’s audio out to the mixer. That way, you can listen to your iTunes, Soundtrack and your deck’s audio output. This is how my Mackie is set up.
(Don’t tell me you’re not connecting a video monitor as well! :-))

It’s best to leave the midtones balance eyedropper alone unless the DP shot with a Chip Chart. Stick with black and white.

Avoid Capture Now totally, first of all. Use Log and Batch Capture. Secondly, limit your Scratch Disk capture to 30 minutes if you absolutely have to use Capture Now. Your Scratch Disk is way to huge and FCP lags to set aside blocks to capture to. Log and Batch Capture avoids this problem totally, that’s why I suggest it.
