Log and Capture Lag problem
We have 3 identical FCP’s running 4.5 HD on dual 2.0 G5’s, 3 gig of ram/aja/1.5 tb raid drives. Two of them have a 3-6 second lag time before capturing begins. With the other system, capture begins in the snap of a finger. The audio/video settings, system settings and user preferences are all the same on everything.
What am I doing wrong?

Avoid Capture Now totally, first of all. Use Log and Batch Capture. Secondly, limit your Scratch Disk capture to 30 minutes if you absolutely have to use Capture Now. Your Scratch Disk is way to huge and FCP lags to set aside blocks to capture to. Log and Batch Capture avoids this problem totally, that’s why I suggest it.

I limited the capture now time to 5 minutes, more than they will ever need, and it seems to have solved the problem with capture now. None of the editors have ever gotten into the practice of using batch capture. We are a television station they seem to be used to capturing clips on the fly from shows they produce promos for.
