The PPMulator plug-in is great, but it doesn’t work as an output monitor from FCP.

    Thanks Jeremy.

I’m off on an OB covering a live sports event, and I want to prep lots of motion graphics in AE, and drop text on top in FCP as the event progresses, then playout both streams (fill and key) to the video mixer.

Only I put this scenario to Aja Support, and they were less than unequivocal in their response… quote ‘Yes, you can do it within Aja TV, but I’m not 100% sure about FCP’.

    You are absolutely 100% sure?

Usually I have the luxury of sending the audio to a professional dubbing facility, but when budgets are tight I use Logic Pro to mix/sweeten all my audio, using a plug-in called PPMulator to monitor the output levels. This emulates the PPM meters calibrated to BBC standards.

Unfortunately this plug-in doesn’t work with FCP.

As a rough guide, you should try to aim for an average level higher than -18db but lower than -12db.

You can use FCP audio filters like compression and EQ to sweeten the sound, but you really need a good monitoring system to hear what changes are being made, otherwise you can make a real mess of it without realising.

Again, refer to your broadcaster’s documents, as they should be very detailed about what will be accepted in terms of audio quality.

    Good luck!

Hi Christian, as John said, it really depends on who you are delivering to.

Here’s the BBC Technical Delivery Standards document, and if you deliver to these standards I doubt your broadcaster will have any complaints.

  • Desmond, the longest digibeta tape is 124 minutes. Sounds like you’ll be taking this somewhere to have it recorded onto tape; if so, ask their advice first, but the PNG idea is total nonsense. Find out what codec the facilities house prefer you to use (if you turn up with the wrong thing, they’ll charge you for re-rendering time etc).

    Good luck!

    Hi John,

What happens after that? Is the insert successful apart from the audio drop, or do you get an error message?

    More info would be handy.

BTW, is your in point set over a transition? If so, move the in point away from the transition.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions. The thumbs seem the likely culprit, as crashes tend to occur when navigating in and out of the timeline or up and down using the hand.

And yes, I need to get round to updating, but loathe to do it during a project.
