You don’t want a VU meter, you want a calibrated, compensated Peak meter.

Buy a hardware solution (with correlation, starts at 2K USD, we prefer RTW as industry standard over here)

The PPMulator plug-in is great, but it doesn’t work as an output monitor from FCP.

You can make ppmulator pro work with fcp using audio hijack pro. I have it working on my mbp.
