I had a similar issue recently when I upgraded our computer. It turned out that the firewire port on the new motherboard was somehow faulty. The funny thing was that it would occasionally capture the odd frame or two. Anyway, when we put the old firewire card from the old computer into the new computer, that worked fine.

Okay, the problem is now solved.

Steve, I also tried HDV Split as you suggested, and again got the same issue. The firewire was driving the camera but not seeing any video and not capturing.

So I took it back to the people who did the upgrade and asked them to try my old firewire card, and that worked fine. So, now it is seeing video and capturing properly.

So it looks like the new onboard firewire was dodgy.

Thanks Steve. I may have had that set incorrectly. I’ve now made sure I’m using the internal capture feature. I’m now getting the occasional still image on the capture window, but the video is not playing continuously. Also, the timecode numbers are showing to the right of the window. But still it won’t actually capture. Maybe I have firewire issues?

I just installed Windows Movie Maker and I get exactly the same problem. The program sees the cam and drives the controls but it doesn’t see any video and nor does it capture anything.

  • Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It’s frustrating that Vegas seems to be working fine, except that now I can’t capture video.

Is it a software problem or a firewire problem?

    Thanks for any ideas. 🙂

I’m also pretty impressed with this Open Book effect, so thanks Theo for posting the link.

Thanks, John. So there is very little noticeable difference in quality between MPEG-2 and AVI?

  • Thanks Danny. Please can somebody confirm that MPEG-2 and AC3 rendered separately as video and audio is the best way to do things? Thanks.

I had a similar problem about ten minutes into a Vegas project where the video stopped being visible but audio was present. It turns out that I had a couple of settings in NTSC instead of PAL (I’m in Australia).
