Drobo calls it “beyond raid”. They would say it’s neither. A quick view of their front page video would be worth the look.
The 256 mSATA card acts basically as a cache and can improve read speeds up to 3x’s (they claim).

I’ve used them for years, and the beauty of it is it maintains itself, you can throw any drive in there (any make, model, size, or speed) and the update the firmware as drives get bigger. You also don’t have to completely fill up all the bays so it’s very expandable. And it let’s you know when a drive is going out or has failed and has built in protection. Hence the name drobo, it’s supposed to be a data robot and do all the work for you.

They aren’t necessarily fast enough, if you got the 5Dt w/Thunderbolt 2 it would probably be fine. I’m using the old Drobo S via USB 3.0 and cutting 4k stuff, and it’s actually not been bad. No mSATA on my chassis.
They do have problems mounting sometimes, which is why I was looking on here. Occasionally lots of rebooting is necessary, but it has always shown up eventually.

So I’m a fan for the price-point and expandability!

Thanks for that Ty–we are definitely taking a look at RX3/advanced. The sample is by no means perfect, but still is very impressive what you were able to do with it. Thanks for taking the time.

Thanks for the response Warren–I think it’s going to be a little more complicated than that…

    Thanks for the advice Brian.

I have been doing pro audio for 15 years or so, but you’re right, I do want to find out insight gained from others, especially about Zaxcom. I’m not a freelancer and my company actually has about 5 788Ts since we do so much audio work. I’m extremely happy with the 788T, just wanting to do the research and see if I’m missing anything that Zaxcom has to offer.

Almost nothing we do is actually live, but what does it lack that makes it useless for you?

    Bruce,
We normally just track each isolated boom, lav, etc. with good levels and then do most of the mixing in post. However, I do often patch inputs to extra tracks so the editor can have everything in one place, and if possible, I double up the tracks with one being 6dB higher so I can push it pretty hard and have backup if it clips. I’m pretty sure the 788 can also act as a mixer, and you can set levels for a mix independent of the isolated tracks, but we don’t normally have any reason to do that. We also do multi cam setups with timecode.

Thanks for writing back Eric. Would you mind elaborating on your comments? I would say you can mix on the 788t, so I’m wondering why you say that, but we are essentially just wanting to track everything anyway in production, and mix in post.
And it would be great to hear what the best bells and whistles are on the Nomad–I’m looking for specifics as to how they contrast.

I just posted, but can’t edit because I’m still under moderation–after using forums for years! Don’t know what they’re waiting for…

Anyway, I got mine to open simply by right clicking file and pointing to CT under Open with.

Evan, any luck on this? I haven’t received an error yet, but it just seems to be hanging and not opening. Same deal here, have never opened on this system…
