As far as the config guide, you don’t need a serial number to download, just click “skip registration and download” at the bottom of the page. They should really move that button to the top…

Not sure if it’s exactly the look you’re going for, but I occasionally do a qualification that selects just the highlights, then grow that key larger than the highlight, soften the key, and lift up the shadows/midtones within, which gives a kind of hazy glow to light sources… it’s a little too uniform sometimes (highlights far away will glow with the same size as highlights close) so splitting it out into several sizes…

Working with your TV is a good way to do the set-up… The decklink puts out the same signal over the SDI and HDMI so it’s simply a matter of the accuracy of the displays.
As far as actual reference monitors Some people use the HP Dreamcolor 2480zx monitor that has an HDMI in and can be calibrated to Rec. 709 with a certain degree of difficulty… It’s $2,400 or so…
Also In that range is the Flanders Scientific LM-1760W at $2,500 and the larger LM-2461W at $5,000 which my calibration specialist describes as the best out of the box of anything he’s seen at any price range…
If you go below $2,400 a THX certified Plasma TV with an HDMI in would be your best bet. Plasmas have more color drift though – they must be given a lot of attention.

That’s based on the 1GB GTX285 having more CUDA power, correct? What kind of difference would the 1GB vs. 2GB mean for higher than 2K resolutions? I would wonder if the 4000 is less likely to choke on huge frame sizes?

Check in the support section of the Blackmagic website to see their configuration guide as well as the Resolve manual… but basically:
Mac Pro – check
GUI Graphics card – check
CUDA graphics card – look at flashed GTX285s on eBay for least expensive options
Video interface card – look at Decklink Extreme 3/3D/3D+
Grading monitor – checkYou can certainly learn the software with the Lite version (soon) and no interface, the lower priced panels are the Tangent Wave and the Avid MC Color. Both are in the 1,300-1,500 range I think, I like them both but have only used the Wave with Resolve.
I enjoyed “The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction” by Steve Hullfish and the newer “Color Correction Handbook: Professional Techniques for Video and Cinema” by Alexis Van Hurkman. And “The Print” by Ansel Adams!

It’ll run with just one GUI monitor, lots of people do that, but you’ll have nowhere to put the scopes. Three across is really a great set-up…

You could potentially set it up a number of ways, here’s one:
– GT120, DVI output goes to computer monitor #1, Minidisplayport goes to computer monitor #2
– GTX 285/4000, nothing connected
– Decklink, SDI and HDMI outputs go to grading and client displaysAnd then in FCP you can send video and audio out via the Decklink SDI, or use desktop preview if you want to put it onto a computer monitor…Other programs that support the decklink should work the same way. I actually switch computer monitor #2 over to Ultrascopes when using Resolve, and back to the Mac when doing anything else.
