Setting up Decklink Sudio
Posted by David Smith on July 16, 2011 at 8:19 pmI’m moving from Apple Color to Resolve 8. In doing so I have replace a graphics card with at a gt-120 and added a Nvidia Quadro 4000 and a Decklink Studio.
I have read the configuration Manual From Blackmagic and am reading the software manual.
But I’m still confused about something.
1) How does the external display for FCP and other apps now work? Do I use the Decklink for that too? Will I still be able to use my 2nd monitor as a 2nd screen?

July 16, 2011 at 8:52 pmYou could potentially set it up a number of ways, here’s one:
– GT120, DVI output goes to computer monitor #1, Minidisplayport goes to computer monitor #2
– GTX 285/4000, nothing connected
– Decklink, SDI and HDMI outputs go to grading and client displaysAnd then in FCP you can send video and audio out via the Decklink SDI, or use desktop preview if you want to put it onto a computer monitor…Other programs that support the decklink should work the same way. I actually switch computer monitor #2 over to Ultrascopes when using Resolve, and back to the Mac when doing anything else.

July 16, 2011 at 9:59 pmThanks Kevin,
That clears things up a lot for me. So I need 3 monitors (including the grading display).
I discovered I need a new monitor anyway since Resolve wont work on my 1680×1050.

July 17, 2011 at 12:15 amIt’ll run with just one GUI monitor, lots of people do that, but you’ll have nowhere to put the scopes. Three across is really a great set-up…

July 17, 2011 at 2:46 amThis whole concept of using the Capture card to connect to my monitor is new to me.
I still can’t get a picture on my monitor using any software – although Video Camera > Decklink SDI> Media Express> Decklink HDMI > TV HDMI works fine.
1) Should it be able to see my monitor as a display in my Mac Pro settings?
2) If not how will I be able to calibrate my monitor now?

July 17, 2011 at 5:47 pmWhat kind of monitor is it? Does it have SDI or HDMI inputs?

July 17, 2011 at 7:49 pmAt the moment I’m simply trying to get a picture with the HDMI input on my TV (I have a color correct monitor but need an HDLink I’m think).
I figure I should be able to set up everything with the HDMI TV – not color correct of course – just see everything working.
I have a NEC PA241w. It has DVI or Display Port (not mini) as the main inputs. It is a color correct monitor capable of 10 bit – it’s considered a “pro” monitor, but I’m not sure why it’s lacking in SDI or HDMI.
By the way – what is the cheapest Color Reference monitor with SDI inputs?

July 19, 2011 at 1:41 pmWorking with your TV is a good way to do the set-up… The decklink puts out the same signal over the SDI and HDMI so it’s simply a matter of the accuracy of the displays.
As far as actual reference monitors Some people use the HP Dreamcolor 2480zx monitor that has an HDMI in and can be calibrated to Rec. 709 with a certain degree of difficulty… It’s $2,400 or so…
Also In that range is the Flanders Scientific LM-1760W at $2,500 and the larger LM-2461W at $5,000 which my calibration specialist describes as the best out of the box of anything he’s seen at any price range…
If you go below $2,400 a THX certified Plasma TV with an HDMI in would be your best bet. Plasmas have more color drift though – they must be given a lot of attention.

July 19, 2011 at 11:52 pmThanks Kevin for the answers.
It was between the Dream Color and the NEC back when I was shopping around. I ended up with the NEC because it was half the price, but in hindsight I wish I had gone with the Dreamcolor.
I finally got the settings right and can see a picture on the TV! So I can now at least start to learn the software.
The next step is to buy an HDLink (the displayport version) when I want to hook up to me NEC.
So much to learn……

April 7, 2012 at 2:39 pmHi David,
I m french ( that s why my english is so poor… ) and have just bought a decklink studio to get video output to my NEC PA241W and it dosn t work ! It s very frustrating.
I can only get 720p but with a dirty red image.
Do you use resolve/decklink studio 2/PA 241w successfully ?
My PA241W says that the 1080p input is out of the signal. It seems to be a problem of frequency ( 30 hz… )
It will be very hopefull if you can make this three thing works together…
Thanks
