Yeah, the Advanced Profiling Solution works with the Dreamcolor probe, and as far as I know it’s the only way to manage certain aspects of the Dreamcolor color management… the good news is, it’s available for your Mac, so no need to lug a PC over to work with it… the bad news is it’s an extra 350 bucks.

But talk to your calibration person, mine once told me that the probe is specific to the Dreamcolor because there there is a physical difference between it and other xrite probes (some filtration) and that he needed to use that software and probe alongside his non-contact probe in order to get at all the controls. Things might have changed though, I switched to an FSI about a year ago…

Hey Andrew, are you using the Dreamcolor APS and Dreamcolor probe? The gamma option usually pops up in the advanced page once you’ve selected the monitor as 2480zx…

One weird thing about it, the Dreamcolor must be connected via USB for the advanced page to show up, even if you aren’t otherwise plugging USB devices in… Unless they’ve changed it, there’s no warning to tell you that you’re missing out on the advanced page…

As has Sony for their 56″ 4K monitor, I believe…

I was hoping they would announce support for the 4K card along with the 8.1 release but I don’t see it mentioned anywhere. They also don’t appear to be shipping it yet, though at one point they did label it on the website for September.

To get everything advertised with the 4K card, they would also have to enable XYZ color spaces on non-linux versions.

But yeah, curious to hear from BMD about this configuration.

    Thanks Knut,

That’s what my testing seems to suggest – adjusting color bars with the grading controls seems imprecise to me, and bringing in RGB DPX files with legal values for the bars should work, except that it can’t have the same LUT applied that is being applied to the rest of the footage… I suppose I can do the output LUTs by track…

Hopefully when the color bar tool is enabled it works with all these possibilities…

10-bit RGB DPX files in 64-940/legally scaled values.

So I’m monitoring full-range values (with the output LUT), and I’m not laying off to tape so an insert edit isn’t really an option… It certainly clips before getting to the monitoring settings…

September 22, 2011 at 6:53 pm in reply to: Input Scaling Settings for RED R3D

My understanding is that Resolve will use the decoder settings (i.e. full-res, half-res, quarter-res, sixteenth res…) first and then scale using that result. So that choosing half-res and scaling up will result in lost potential quality.

However you can override the project decoder settings on a shot by shot basis, just right-click and edit RED properties and it’s a drop-down option for the individual shot… so you can just change it there if you have a shot where it becomes an issue…

If you are already working in full-res, DaVinci is supposed to do the math so that you don’t lose quality… so it shouldn’t matter Resolve scales to fit and then you scale up… I think the same goes if you have a lower-res sequence like 1080p and then set the outputs to be 2K/4K, it should give you the highest quality path…

I use the Ultrascope and it’s great…mostly. It’s very cheap ($1,700 for a turnkey setup from B&H, I did mine from ebay for maybe $1,200) and accurate and absolutely worth having a dedicated 1080p display just for ease of sight. What is less awesome is that in the year I’ve had them, they really haven’t made any improvements and have left out what should be easy options (changing the color of the guidelines lines on the vectorscope so you can see the center over your image data, or additional guidelines on the waveforms and vectorscope, or the ability to rearrange the scopes…) I’d also love to see 2K resolution and some Digital Cinema related functions, not sure if those would require new hardware…

  • I would love to see this function added – perhaps as set of bezier curves in the curves tab that allowed you to adjust the luma ranges for the highlights, mids, and shadows controls… the second shot Sascha posted is exactly why, when you run into a shot like that, you could define highlights as 40%+, mids around 20% and shadows below 10%, easier than pulling three keys… and could be used for operator preference for the overall project or projects…

I always liked this function on the Avid DS system (which also had a handy three-tone preview, black gray white to tell you what in your current image falls into which categories, roughly).

I was using a Panasonic VT25 and my calibration guy left one profile that was “unmanaged,” there was definitely a visible difference between the two profiles… could have been specific to the set or the calibrations though… Yeah the HDLink might do the trick…
