pretty much any old pc will ram preview hd in realtime.. the question is how much you will be able to ram preview? that will be determined by the amount of ram, and if ae can only use 2gb of ram in windows-32bit you may be pretty limited. if you are going to playout from disk then you will need to get a disk (or disk array) that is capable of reading at the data rate of the codec that you will use (dvcprohd, for example, has a data rate that is within firewire800 specs, not too bad).
i assume you are wanting to capture directly from ae to your eq…. you will need an hd capture/playout card like a decklink hd card from blackmagic, they start at around $1000 but you’ll need to check your connection requirements for the eq or house routing system.

how about pasting your illustrator paths as masks on a layer, then animate stroke with use all masks, stroke sequentially and reveal image options.

if the text is already in a text box, just go to edit the text (click it with the text tool, or double click the text layer, etc) then you should see the handles to modify the box.

i assume this is the same logo that you separted into layers in illustrator…
if it is, and the ‘release to layers’ function worked for you, then there is pretty quick way to build this in illustrator and ae, but you won’t have much control… in illustrator i said to use the ‘release to layers (sequence)’, try using the ‘release to layers (build)’ instead. pull the new separated layer out of the parent layer and delete the parent. select all the layers and choose ‘reerse order’ from the layers palette menu and save.
now import into ae as a comp. open the comp and set the comp duration to at least the same number of frames that you have layers (actually you should figure out how long quickly each dot should add on, and set you comp accordingly). select all of you layers and trim them to the frame length you need (postion the time indicator line where you want to trim and hit option-] (that’s option-right bracket on mac). then choose sequence layers from the keyframe assistant.
you ai layers should now add together, the only trouble is if you need to reorder the way the add on, you will have to go back to illustrator and do it all over again.

illustrator cs2 will run on an intel mac, i’ve been running it for 6 months on a mac pro with no issues to speak of.
ae6.5 should run as well as ae7 which i have been running for the same amount of time. there are problems with opengl accelerated effects and cycore effects that are bundled with ae, but it works well if you avoid those.
fcp, i don’t have.
i might consider buying a used powerbook, though… if you don’t want to upgrade your software to universal binaries, why upgrade to an intel mac? i’m not sure how big of a performance upgrade you are going to get without the ub software. or are you planning to upgrade later when you have the funds?

how fast is the credit roll?
if the move is too great between frames then the roll will seem kind of jerky or strobe-like regardless of restricting to whole pixel movement.
try doubling the credit roll duration and see it still seems strobe-like.

May 24, 2007 at 5:50 pm in reply to: illustrator to AE file: putting objects on a seperate layer, not grouped or in a folder?to save you a bit of time in ai… select all your illustrator paths, then choose ‘release to layers (sequence)’ from the layers palette menu (little triangle in the corner). then you will need to select the layers that are contained within the parent layer and drag them out and delet the parent layer.
now you can import as comp in ae.

not knowing exactly what you image looks like, you might try applying layer>auto trace to your worker image… auto trace will create a mask that you can then apply an effect like stroke to and animate that around the mask path.
if auto trace isn’t working for you, you can manually create a mask with the pen tool to apply stroke to.
or, since it is a still image, you could use photoshop to create a vector mask around your worker and then bring that into ae and apply stroke to in a similar way.
as far as adding pictures, i believe you need to post them elsewhere on the web and link to them in your post.

you may be able to do it cs3, adobe seems to have improved integreation between photoshop and ae in the cs3 suite. but the only way i know of is to recreate the gradient in colorama, which really is too difficult to create a very close gradient.

persistence of vision in film is maintained by flickering the shutter on the projector 3 times per frame to trick your eyes. 24 fps is actually bellow what is necessary to mainatin persitence of motion, it has been tested to be around 60-70 fps for most people.
i agree that if your goal is to appear ‘film-like’ then 24p is a good place to start (although there is a lot more to looking like film than just the frame rate). but there seem to be an increasing perception that 24p is just plain better, and that is not at all true.
