So, I did some searching but couldn’t quite find what I was looking for.

I’m new with AE, but am trying to learn the program while simultaneously using it on a project.

So, I’m working on a commercial for a construction company comprised of a series of stills.

The effect that I’m trying to achieve is to start out with the background, then the outline of the worker appears, then the “blue man” worker, then the blue will fade away revealing just the worker.

Now the part that I’m having trouble with, is the “Outline” layer. I would like it to start at one end, say his left knee cap, and kind of draw itself all the way around till it closes the figure. Make sense?

I’m not sure if I can do this with some simple cropping effect or what?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

not knowing exactly what you image looks like, you might try applying layer>auto trace to your worker image… auto trace will create a mask that you can then apply an effect like stroke to and animate that around the mask path.

if auto trace isn’t working for you, you can manually create a mask with the pen tool to apply stroke to.

or, since it is a still image, you could use photoshop to create a vector mask around your worker and then bring that into ae and apply stroke to in a similar way.

as far as adding pictures, i believe you need to post them elsewhere on the web and link to them in your post.

Yeah, I’m trying to link the pics but it just says, “Sorry. There was an error with your post

I’m gonna take a whack at this:

If by “blue man” you mean a solid color in the shape of your eventual construction worker.

Then you would make a mask in the shape of your construction worker as moldyboot discussed
(set that 1st mask to “add”)

    — then animate a seond mask that starts as a blob (at his left knee cap) — set that 2nd mask to “intersect”
now skip ahead some frames and hit the stopwatch on the second mask’s “shap” (to make keyframes) and stretch this 2nd mask to incorporate more of the body outline — making keyframes on the masks shape — and it will reveal the blue man as it grows — eventually you will need to make the second mask cover 100% of the outline mask and you will have revealed your blue man —

you can make a copy of that reveal mask and use it to reveal the full photo using the same technique — does that help at all?????

Well I already have all my layers created in Photoshop. All I really need to do is animate the outline. But yes, that did help.

Check out my other thread by the same title! It finally decided to work. THere are pics there
