if your photoshop file has transparency (ie, no background.. you can see the checkerboard pattern around it in ps) and you import it, merging layers or as a comp. then you should be able to place that file (or comp) above the layer (or comp or footage) that you want to mask. then select the layer to be masked, and from the pulldown under trkmat in the modes column (if you can’t see the modes column, click the button at the bottom of the timeline that looks like a circle and a square), select alpha matte “name-of-layer-above”.

i’d love to be able to bring the p2/mxf straight to ae. currently i’ve only used fcp on someone elses system to put the p2 dvcprohd files into a quicktime wrapper so i can get them into ae. it’s a little tedious the way fcp imports the p2s, and although i can log in fcp, the logging data is not maintained in ae anyway, so i have a printed log sheet to refer to.

in response to your other question… no it won’t effect a thing, unless you happend to set your final render settings to specifically use opengl to render (it seems even adobe realized opengl was flakey when they implemented it, by default your final render settings use the statndard software render engine).

sorry for the brief answer, i was getting interupted (work… i tell ya). many people just disable opengl previews from the get go, because it can get kind of flakey in ae. also it really wasn’t much good until ae7 and even now it’s limited.
you can also switch the preview render technology with the little button that has the lightning bolt at the bottom of the preview window.

can you import the file you exported from fcp back into fcp and it looks fine? how about opening the file in quicktime, is it ok or white?

the easy way is to get into your preview preference and turn off opengl

my guess at this point is it is a codec issue… the file was encoded out of fcp with a codec that is not availble on your ae system.
are fcp and ae on different sytems? what codec did you use to encode out of fcp (dvcpro, lossless, etc)?

you might try a little directional blur. adjust the direction to follow your motion. it shouldn’t take much blur to smooth things out.
