there is a little button at the top of the timeline called ‘live update’. it slooks like a a box with an ‘x’ in it offset of a solid square (in ae7, anyway).

enable that by clicking it and i think it should help you out.

i don’t have an answer for the first part of your question (i haven’t used premeire). i would assume the quality should be the same, but i’m sure someone else will have an answer for you.

as far as the codec question, that will largely be determiend by what your destination is. are you going to dvd? tape? files on a hard drive?

ok, i had some time today…

here is a version that will look at the layer below it, so it can be pasted into one layer and then duplicated… each duiplicate’s x position will then be based on the layer below it….

apply the motion tile effect via the effects presets, rather than from the preset pulldown from within the motion tile effect panel.

the preset adds a slider control called “autoscroll – vertical” without that the expression is broken. (you could add you own slider and name it autoscrole – vertical i suppose…)

i currently have cs3 production studio installed with several other cs2 apps and ae7, with no problems. i may remove some of the cs2 apps, like photoshop and illustrator soon, but i plan to leave ae7 until i can get more third-party cs3 effects (intel mac) versions.

currently ae cs3 for mac doesn’t support opengl, so you won’t be benefiting from a better card in ae until that gets fixed.

even once that gets fixed, i agree with andrew, you’d still be better off and get better performance with more ram to feed the multiprocessing render engine (this can be enabled in ae preferences). you’d like to have at least 1gb per processing core… that’s in addition to what you’d like to have to opperate other software and the os.

after getting the ram, if you want to upgrade the card, you may have problems getting one. ati has had supply problems for there x1900 (i’m not even sure they have an after market card for the macpro) and i beleive the mac nvidia cards are only made by apply and may also not be available for after market purchase. besides, if ati can’t supply the midrange card, the next step would be the quadrofx 4500, and that’s a big $tep.

i’m sure ther is a much more elegant way to write this…. but using the pickwhip, i was able to create this expression:

with ae6 (with out a specific text plugin, if there is one) i think it would be very laborious… as you outlined.

with ae7, you gain control over individual lines, words and characters within a text string. animating that kind of per character control, you’d have a good shot at (more easily) creating that effect. and that can be saved as a preset, to make it easy to recreate if you have many lines that need to reveal.

in ae6 i would work backwards…. layer out the text in the final positions/rotations. keyframe those, then set your rotations for each, and line them up at the same start position. then see how close that gets you. you’ll end up needing to stagger your final rotation and position keyframes for each letter to get them to stop one at a time, in order.
