you would only need to worry about removing a pulldown if the footage was shot as 24p… do you know if the footage was shot at 24p?

if it was shot at 24p, are you working with individual shots or edited material? if it is individual shots, set the separate fields to none, then drag it onto the make comp icon and step through it on frame at a time, making note of the cadence from frames 1-5 (make note of whole (w) frames and interlaced or split (s) frames). then set the pulldown accordingly (ex. wwwss). this should remove the pulldown, to remove the extra frame, set the comp to 23.976 fps.

if the footage was edited with the pulldown in place, you will need to split it up into the individual shots to effectively remove the pulldown.

this won’t help much now, but ideally, when 24p footage is captured from tape, you should remove the pulldown and extra frame. most capture utilities and nle can be set to do this. then all editing should be done with progressive footage in a 23.976 (23.98 in fcp) timeline. the pulldown should only be added back in when the project is finished and needs to go to tape or other delivery medium for broadcast… note, you could remain in 24p if you were going to produce a progressive dvd or internet/computer playback.

the path text effect has jitter settings that will allow you to animate per character movement… with pretty extreme settings the movement is pretty swarm-like. it also allows comp motion blur.

you would how ever need to generate your onw random letter using the keyboard.

August 10, 2007 at 1:29 pm in reply to: Mussel Flash Tutorial or Free High-Res Footage

back on the main ae basics page, near the top… is an area called sticky posts. click the ‘common aefter efects questions!!! look here first’ link, scrool to the bottom to the free stuff section and click the detonation films link, they usually have free flashes.

i wouldn’t think that it is too hard to photoshop up a few flashes to composite in ae. or even just create an irrregular shapeed mask on a light yellow solid and add glow. the flash usually doesn’t animate much… it just flashes for a frame or two.

August 9, 2007 at 4:51 pm in reply to: some 3D layer issues.

the easiest way would be to try and keep your 3d camera at the same (or very simialr) angle as the camera that shot the subject… or reshoot the subject with the camera angles you want in the 3d comp.

the height of the real camera looks to be at or slightly above eye level, keeping the comp camera at about subject eye level should help maintain the illusion.

take a look at ayatoweb.com. he has a few tutorials there that may be very helpful… in particular examples 49, 50 and 52.

also a couple of free effects, retrodots and halftone (part of pete’s plugins) that may help you ‘halftone’ your image.

both of those will only generate a halftone patten based on luminance, if you need a color halftone, you may need to find a different effect. or, separate the channels of your image using channel combiner on separate duplicates of the image setting each r, g or b channel to luminace only. then applying one of the halftone effects to each layer, modifying the angle as needed. then colorizing the halftone dots to the appropriate color.

or possibly do it in photoshop, which will give you a cmyk dot pattern, which would be more like a newspaper.

August 8, 2007 at 8:43 pm in reply to: GreenScreen Question For Experts

ideally you would have tracking points on your green screen to use to aid in matching the camera move (either manually of for tracking with ae’s motion tracker or other motion tracking software).

since it sounds like you do’t have those, you can try tracking points on the subject and using those. this will only work if your subject is not moving much… the points you track will need to be consistent to be able to use them to track scale. example: if the subjuect was facing the camera the whole time you may be able to track points on each shoulder, or even ears to establish scale. then apply that motion to the background layer.

check the manual and help menu for how to use the tracker controls. you may be able to find a tutorial here too, try searching for ‘motion tracker’

being a new user you may want to check out video copilot. andrew kramer has many good tutorials there, and if you scroll down the page a bit you’ll find one called graffiti that demonstrates one way to accomplish a write-on effect.

i’m not sure about compatibility issues with plugins from new versions… if you have and intel mac or if the cs3 is an intel mac, then probably no.

but if you have the ae7 install disc, they are on that in a folder called extras or third party extras.

i don’t think you’ll find a one stop effect to do this, but try the warp effect with the ‘fish eye’ style setting, then animate bend to a negative value. that should start pulling or pinching the image to the center of the screen. you can try some of the other settings too…

after that you’ll still need to effect the footage off. i would probably start with scalling it off, then maybe animating a mask shape to shape the edges to a more organic/curvilinear shape.

bezier warp may work well too, it’s more work, but should give you more control to pull points in and distort you image as needed. it would also allow you to shape the edges as needed, as it gets sucked in.
