Never heard that before. But maybe for digital editing etc, this is the truth. So most people in the know who edit digitally, have all their FW drives internally? why is that better. thanks! -
thanks Matte.
Maybe I’ll go used and hope it’s in clean condition… great info!

thanks Don:
Do you need to take it in to camera place? how much charge?Fast forward/rewind as good in emergencies as tape cleaner? doing that on what tape, a normal backup tape or the tape shooting with at time?
thanks!

thanks Don:
Do you use a lightmeter, or are you just winging it by eye?I did not know you set the zebra bars, I thought they are either on or off.

thanks Don. Great points as usual.

Shane, that’s interesting what you are saying.
There are folks on FCP 3, then who would like to go to Tiger, but decide not to. Does that suck or what? Can’t Apple make sure the new OS versions will work with important softwares like FCP 3, or is this incompatibility only after a few years intentional?

thanks Matte:
don’t worry about length. Much rather have a thorough answerSo If I fill up a 60 min mini DV tape of footage, and hook up two mini DV, with firewire, original in one and a blank in another. hit play on original and record on other, bam I have perfect copy.
And it sounds actually, like the copy, might even have “better”‘ timecode if the original had breaks or dropouts, correct?
I can’t see the need for having the original timecode in the dupes to be honest. I’m trying to think of scenario for that, and all I can think of is if you had a very high end project that was being worked on by several people.
But for my own personal shorts it should be ok.
I guess if you did a lot of work, and then needed to re-capture, but lost your original and had to go to a copy, that would be another scenario for wanting to match the timecode, but that’s one in a million so I wont worry about it, unless there are other scenarios I have thought of.
Glad to hear that most mini DV camcorders will make perfect copies, that was my next question.
Actually, I bought a Canon ZR 45 for like $360 or so a year ago to use as a deck, but if I need to make a lot of backup copies down the road, as I think I will, once my projects start to really roll, I’m thinking then, just get another cheap camcorder, and not put the wear and tear on my GL1 which is $2000 camera, smart no? and don’t you think buying new is wiser? With used camera you risk, worn heads no — which could make poor copies? You never know the wear and tear on them.

thanks, it did start to work, maybe i was in a bin, not sure.

thanks Don:
I already started with just a few Maxell regular mini DV tapes, so I guess I will stick to them unless you say otherwise.I bought a head cleaning cassette, but was not going to use it until I saw a problem. What do you recommend instead? And do you wait to clean when you see a problem, or clean at certain intervals, problem or no problem.

thanks again Don:
I have three external Lacie drives, and they all go into a hub.The camera I put in the computer direct cause Apple said to do this, correct?
Now Lacie says that could be why drives are popping off, because I’m doing this intensive capturing and the system is overloading, but man! the errors and stuff I’m getting is nuts. Maybe I’ll just eject the two drives not being used first.
I upgraded to Tiger, not knowing whatsoever that FCP 3 would not work with Tiger? I called Apple and said hey! FCP wont install on Tiger. And they said, with great delight, oh that old software now, it wont work with Tiger. Is that obnoxious or what?
Being that I’m actually going to hire editors for most of my work, or do trades etc, I got FCP express, but that was a second shock:
I looked at box for express and thought, wow, this thing has everything basically I could want — only later to see no log and capture. But you know, some high end FCP gurus like Tom Wolsky don’t even like log and capture right?– he prefers getting everything on computer at once and then sub-clipping. Also, the “clip” option in FCP Express log and capture — it that like a log and capture?
Back to the Buses, I don’t understand it too much, but I assume all my firewire stuff is on the same bus?? I have a dual 1.8 G5.
You put your camera on a different bus that the scratch disk? Can I do this? thanks.
