PS Tom, I just did a test. I just dropped a few of the raw clips in the timeline and exported, and got a QT.mov file, and there were no AV files anywhere. My project though did not have, color correctng, music, transitions etc who knows what other variables that my editor had, but I’d really like to solve this mystery. I can’t be storing Terrabyte of these AV files.

    Thanks Tom:
    The issue persist.

What should I do for next time?
And can I fix what I have for this time?

All my hard drives are formatted good. The Raw footage looks fine and plays fine.

Could not this have been the fault of the editor? He took the Raw files, did a complex edit, and then REndered, and exported out QT files back to me. It is these “final” QT files that have these AV files below them.

    Richard:
I used you technicque of setting in and out points and exporting, but here is problem:
I export : Quick Time Movie and I get a Final Cut Express Movie File 1/10 size of my original file.

    I export “using quicktime conversion”
It’s take forever, but I do get a QT file, but it’s 1/4 size of originail with different data rates etc.

So I’m still lost on how to do this.

(I only cut off 4 seconds of a 30 second QT file)

    Thanks again Tom!
Ok, I checked all my six drives and they all are indeed OS Extended. thank God.

And the capture went well. 29 short QT movies.

Any other ideas? appreciate this as the AV files (whatever they are, what are they?) are a huge space nuiscance. Any way to get rid of them or absorb them into the main QT file (ie how you might flatten an image in PHotoshop– hope that analogy works)

thanks Shot, yeah that is not much help.
I captured and it went well.

Editor now says, “well thats what happens when you shoot HD”

If anyone knows what this is please help. It’ killing me on hard drive space.

    Thanks Tom:
Curious , can it be edited in FCP?

How do you define what a standard format is and why is this not a standard format. All I get for “standard format” in Help is something about AVI.

No, dont see it in the timeline:

But I do see in it item properties.
Of couse I see video stuff that does not match either, like sizes, so I thougt it was video.

It was shot on Sony HDR-HC3. Then captured into FCE, then given to my editor, who then e mailed it back as a test. Did he change it to CD sample rate? wonder why. I think he is working on outputting to web if that explains anything.

Anyway, bottom line is if I get red bar, I just have to render it, probably less of hassle than changing things otherwise?

Yeah, this should be so easy, it should be right in front of my face, “change item properties” or change sequence properties. I can’t find it.

Ok, sequece “item properties” just based on putting ntsc in easy set up is:

    And for the clip
    its

I delete the sequence out, and then I lose the timeline. I go windows arrange standard, but that does not work. so I quit and relaunch. Why time line have to disappear?

I tried a lot of different easy set ups Tom, but still get red bar. appreciate your patience.

thanks Richard, ok I saved the help menu to desktop. ( I tried to learn FCP2 years ago with Tom’s outstanding book, but bailed on it as a photographer it was too much to learn 2 complex software at once — PHotoshop and FCP), so I decided to hire an editor to edit, and now I only use software to capture and other odd things. But I’ll pick up Tom’s FCE book… but anyway, for sequence, the frame size is 1440x 1080, vid rate, 25 fps, audio rate 48, format 32 bit. For clip received from editor it’s 720 x 420, 29.97, 22.1 audio rate, 16 bit, and square pixel aspect.

I guess ? this is becuase I capture in HD (for furture possible needs), but then the editor edits for standard def for current needs?

Any, so that means I have sequence settings for HD for future needs while I capture, but when I get these clips back, I should change sequece settings for standard def? Can one do that, like save presents for the sequece settings, so one can swith back and forth on that? Photoshop style?

(my guess is no — as sequence setting don’t even show a way to change any of this, has only tabs for timeline options and render control)
