Read up the manual about Media Manager.

I have no idea what the last sentence means. What is FCPE? Are you using FCP or FCE? There is no media manager in FCE. There is no simple way to do what you want in that application.

You can do this in FCP with media manager.

    But not FCE?
Is there anything on my computer that will let me cut directly on files? quicktime?

Mark and In and an Out for each clip and choose File > Export Movie

    Then make a self-contained movie

Thanks Richard seems to work well.

Curious though, why does my editors footage need to be renedered. I can’t see the footage until I render it. In my FCP studies, I remember dragging in clips and being able to examine the footage before any rendering. (becuase it’s HD?)

Make sure you clip settings match exactly your sequence settings. Check item properties for the clips and for the sequence.
