  • Quite bizarre: FCP is ejecting my external hardrives

This is so bizarre I hate to post, but I’m absolutely sure this is happening.

I recently got copy of FCP Express HD, and while I’m using it several of my external hardrives eject (drop from the bus). I actually see it happen before my own eyes, as the software freezes up and wont quit and then finally quits and one or two of my hardrives drop from the bus. And they are hardrives that are not even set as scratch drives!

Is this a bad copy of the software. has anyone heard of this? thanks.

First of all, external FireWire drives absolutely SUCK and you should avoid themif at all possible as Apple does NOT recommend them, never has and prob’ly won’t ever.

If you are forced to use them, put them on a separate bus via a PCI (tower) or PCMCIA (PowerBook) card to add not only ports but an additional bus.

Finally, make damn sure that they are initialized with Mac OS Extended in Disk Utility.

    Kevin:
Never heard that before. But maybe for digital editing etc, this is the truth. So most people in the know who edit digitally, have all their FW drives internally? why is that better. thanks!
