[Chris Babbitt] “I can afford a larger file size. Is there something better in Compressor?”
Elgato Turbo.264. Best $90 I have ever spent. Plug in the USB thingie, install the software, drop a file, choose a preset and go. This things beats Compressor any day. And it faster than lightning. I get anywhere from 20-60 frames per second with 720/24p DVCProHD footage.

[Karim Daire] “So does that mean to output any kind of Full HD Material I need to get a video-card like Blackmagic or AJA or can you also transfer HD Signals through a firewire connection?? “
Not sure what you are wanting to do here, but I’ll give it a shot. If I don’t answer your question post back with a detailed list of what you are trying to accomplish.
Are you trying to send HD to tape? Monitor? what exactly do you want? You can monitor HDV over firewire but it is downresed to SD in FCP. You cannot monitor any other HD thru FW. If you are trying to go to tape, what deck are you using?

[Samuel Klay] “Please let me know if there is other info that would be helpful. Thanks again for your help. “
Is there a question in there somewhere?

Nice gig! I would think that Panny could spare a book for you. I can’t wait to hear about the 170, that looks like a really neat option, especially with an HD-SDI spigot.

[Shane Ross] “I need to get that book. “
Glad I could help you out for once.
Didn’t you just get your 200? I thought that Barry’s book was coming with them now.

Shane,
I don’t have my camera or manual with me today but I do have Barry’s book. It says that you use the INITIAL function to restore the factory settings. I can only guess that this is in the SCENE FILE menu somewhere.
Hope this helps,

[Chris Babbitt] “What’s the best file / codec type for delivering a 3 minute HD video that will be compatible with most computers with the least amount of compression that will fit on a data DVD?”
Well, it depends on what your rational behind “best” is. Best quality? Best compatibility? Both?
If it were me, and most files that I deliver to a client like this are for projection in a meeting setting, I would deliver h.264. I use Elgato’s Turbo.264 encoder and use the AppleTV preset for DVCProHD stuff. It looks amazing.

John,
I watched part of this and it seemed to run just fine as long as I paused it and waited for it to buffer a little. I think that is to be expected with a file that large. You could try lowering the data rate or frame rate a little but that will cause a quality hit. You could probably cut the data rate in half or even more before it becomes too noticeable.

John,
Sounds like you got several great responses. I wasn’t ignoring your post just gave my computer a little break over the holiday.
I use an enclosure from Other World Computing called the Mercury On-the-Go. It comes in several forms, mine is the FW400/800 and USB2. I do not use the USb connection, but the FW800 works just fine. I can get two DVCProHD 720/24p streams with no problem. If I add much more than that I have to render a little more. I should mention that the drive that I put in the enclosure is the old 7200 RPM dirve that came in my MBP. It is a 100gig and when I upgraded to a 200gig in my MBP I thought that it would be nice just to have a bus-powered drive to use as a back up, transfer, quickie edit drive. It works better than I expected so it gets a little more use than I thought it would.
