August 29, 2008 at 1:47 pm in reply to: P2 cards and offline and online workflow advise…Hamilton,
Like Walter said, no reason for an offline with P2.
As far as numbers go, DVCProHD footage is going to have a higher datarate than HDV, considering that HDV is the same as DV. There is a good article on the cow somewhere (sorry, didn’t have time to find it right now) that details the differences in datarates.
What I can tell you is this:
1. I have been working with P2 footage shot with the HVX200 for 2 years now.
2. I shoot 720/24\pN all the time.
3. I edit with a MBP 2.16, 2 gigs, and FCS2 with no problems.
4. Footage is either stored on a single FW800 bus powered 2.5″ drive with which I can get two streams in real-time just fine OR a CalDigit S2VRHD five disk RAID connected via eSATA with which I can get a bunch of streams (never really maxed it out to see just how many)
5. P2 is very easy to deal with.Do your research, watch Shane’s tutorial on the cow, and have a backup and archive plan in place and you should have a positive experience as well.

August 28, 2008 at 5:34 pm in reply to: Can you tell the difference between SD and DVCPRO HD after downconverted? In short, yes, I think that the color looks better when going from HD to SD than it does with a straight MiniDv camera. That’s not to say that all SD cameras look worse compared to the HVX200. Not by a long shot. I do know that I can tell a difference between stuff show on my HVX and stuff shot on a PD170.
It also makes a difference in what sequence settings you use. If you edit in a DV timeline your graphics will not look as good as they would if you started in an HD timeline.
FWIW,

What camera, camera settings, and Easy setup did you use? Where is your footage stored, external or System Drive? If it’s external how is it connected? What are you r system specs? With a little more info perhaps we can give you a better diagnosis.

What drive are you capturing to? How is it formatted? Do you have a capture limit set in the Log and Capture settings?

FCP does not wuork with mpeg video. mpeg is a delivery format. YOu need to use something like mpegstreamclip to convert your footage to a format that is usable by FCP.

Adam,
have you tried exporting a self contained file from FCP, dropping that into Compressor and selecting the AppleTV preset? I have had decent results with that. For most, h.264 encoding that I do I use the Elgato Turbo.264 encoder. I find that it is better than Compressor.
[Adam Ducharme] “but native frame size and the least amount of pixilation is important. “
Remember that most computer monitor will not be able to play back something at that high resolution. I think that you are better off sacrificing a little resolution for better play back.

Check out Digital Juice’s StackTraxx line of production music. There is an ad here on the cow that gets you $25 off.

[Vince Becquiot] “I will probably get some angry answers for even mentioning it, but here goes:”
Vince,
Not an angry response just one of shock and disbelief. I don’t know why this shocks me, but it still does. I cannot see how people justify this. I make a lot of one-offs for presentations and I never allow the client to chose the music unless they agree to license it. I am upfront about this and obtain at least an estimate of what the license will cost before I begin the project. Sometimes the client pays and sometimes they opt for royalty free music. To me the “For your eyes only” slates are a cop out.
OK, I’ll get off of Stephen’s soapbox.

Also, make sure that you have at least Studio 5.1. Anything earlier will not run properly on an Intel box.
