  • that’s kinda what I was thinking, I’ve edited HDV footage before but never comped it, you’re totally correct about the data rate, it’s virtually identical to the dv settings I usually use. Anyone else have any thoughts/experience with compositing green/bluescreen with HDV footage???

    I’d appreciate your thoughts

  • oops, I forgot to mention, I’m talking specifically about pulling mattes off of green/blue screen footage shot with HDV cameras.

  • ah also a good call…this problem has plagued me for some time…thanks for the suggestion.

also you might want to make to try rendering your footage in 16-bit colour space instead of the standard 8-bit…By default AE uses 8-bit, but there is a simple way to switch it over….it might get rid of the posturization that you’re encountering (it’ll smooth out some of the gradients between colours) In your project viewer (the one where all your footage and comps are) you’ll see at the bottom next to the trash can icon it says “8bpc” …ALT-click on it and it should change your comp into a 16-bit colourspace…be warned though, this will seriously increase your render time!

this problem happens to me too…I’ve never figured out why….maybe I’m a dumb-head…but when working in 3-d in after effects is their anyway to change the measurements of the z-axis…like from pixles to inches/meters/feet…anything!? 1 pixel means very little to me when trying to reproduce accurate dimensions within a pseudo-3D space…I dunno, I’ve never been able to get very far with the 3D layers in after effects without encountering this same problem….

would also love to know why this happens

probably you need to precompose your layer first…select the layer you’re applying the effect on then go up to “Layer” and choose “precompose” (way at the bottom of the selections). Precompose it and you should be able to apply the effect to the whole comp area.

usually the problem you reffer to happens to when someone trys to apply an effect to a text layer….this is the quick way of getting around this annoying problem

    good luck

  • Woops…forgot to mention, I realize I can make those angled brushes as well…what I’m looking for is something more akin to the “spongy” type preset brushes in PS….maybe someone knows of some presets I could download, etc….

    thanks again
