  • video in 3D space pops through solid layers

Posted by Thecynic on June 7, 2006 at 8:08 pm

    Hello,
I am essentially trying to build a 3D television. I have a layer of video with several black solid layers behind it, however when the camera moves around the “TV”, The video layer pops through at random (in reverse of course).
The 3D video layer is in front of 8 black solid layers(each 1 pixel apart in Z space). That comp is placed into a “TV” set Comp. And then that is placed into a location comp with an animated camera.
I have no clue why the layer would flicker through 8 solid layers at full opacity when viewed from behind.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    David

are your black solids 3D, if not try activating the cube for them too .

Yep, my black solid layers are 3D just like the video layer. Since the 8 layers are stacked in Z space, most of the time they look like a solid black hexahedron. It gives the impression of a flat screen TV with about an inch of thickness.
The problem is that when the camera moves at different angles behind the 3D comp, the video layer flickers through the stack of 8 solid, opaque, 3D layers.

Are you adjusting your point of intrest as well as the position value?

The point of interest remains constant throughout the camera move, but this is intentional because I want the camera to focus on the TV as it spins around it.
The camera movement is fine. It is suppose to move in 3D space and view the 3D TV from behind. My problem is that the image on the front of the TV appears through the backside despite several opaque layers being placed behind the video layer.
    thanks,
    David

If the point of intrest doesn’t move it could be that you are still focused on the screen… I don’t see why this would cause you to see through the opaque layers but try moving the POI so that the focal distance of the camera reamins constant… in other words move the POI when you move the camera focusing on the opaque layers instead of the “screen”
This may work if not… hmmm. I suppos you could sent me the project File.. and I will try figguring it out for you

this problem happens to me too…I’ve never figured out why….maybe I’m a dumb-head…but when working in 3-d in after effects is their anyway to change the measurements of the z-axis…like from pixles to inches/meters/feet…anything!? 1 pixel means very little to me when trying to reproduce accurate dimensions within a pseudo-3D space…I dunno, I’ve never been able to get very far with the 3D layers in after effects without encountering this same problem….

would also love to know why this happens

I reposted on Creative Cow and recieved a very brief answer from Mylenium that solved my problem:
1 pixel is not enough Z-depth separation. Minimum is 3 pixels for AE’s scanline renderer to work properly.
