I’m using the last one that worked with FCP7, Motion 4.0.3

As a test a made a simple text graphic in Motion, saved, quit Motion, dragged file into PP Browser, dragged file from Browser into sequence (keyed as expected – plus real-time playback), right clicked on clip to select edit original, Motion launched, made changes, found them reflected in PP sequence!

Be interested if Motion 5 worked this way, but suspect not as it didn’t work in FCP7.

    Cheers, Ken.

I see – I’m beginning to understand it all now – that’s been really helpful, thanks a lot Shane.

Oh, and I assume that HDV and XDCAM and other non-Avid codecs that HAVEN’T been through the FCP edit system – these will be OK to edit under AMA, or should they be converted too?

    Thanks a ton, Ken.

Thanks for this. Are there any codecs that can happily be shared between FCP and Avid – ProRes maybe? And if I may ask another – do you advise the correct workflow then as using AMA to preview and trim legacy codec material, then transcode to DNxHD at the first edit assembly/rough cut stage?

    Cheers, Ken.

UPDATE: I transcoded one of these ‘corrupt’ HDV clips using Avid into the DNxHD codec – and it plays fine. So the problem I guess must be AMA and HDV?

I can’t get colorista to work here on PrPro 5.5 – crashes every time. Will see if there’s an upgrade.

December 9, 2011 at 10:31 am in reply to: Dynamic link: AE renders in PP not working

UPDATE when I tried exporting the range from PP to disc (when weirdly I was not able to name the file or choose where it went) I discovered on playing back the AE ‘ramp to freeze time remap’ I embedded in PP I got frame blending interpolation as the clip slowed down…. I’m sure I must be missing something (and as an aside – how do I dictate where exports go, and give them file names?).

    Cheers, Ken.

November 14, 2011 at 3:02 pm in reply to: At Wits End: Crashing (With Report)

I have this a lot. Guess that’s why they wrote FCPX. I can cut all day without a problem with cuts and mixes, but as soon as I build a complex timeline its crash city. By complex, I mean multiple video layers using composite modes, third party filters and Motion overlays (for titles). Then it’s crash 10 or 20 times a day, or more. Out of Memory errors is the first sign of trouble. I tried a new drive, clean instal, this didn’t help me. What does help are the basics as mentioned here before:

Reduce project size by copying timeline into new project.

    Try never to mix codecs

Never use stills – render fist with AE or Motion

Disable render when skipping through the timeline or working with audio scrubbing (caps lock key)

And my favourite new tip – turn off filters globally when re-editing (in sequence settings/render control)

    Hope this help,

    Best, Ken.

November 5, 2011 at 11:28 am in reply to: MC 6 on an LHe Please!

As a current FCP7 editor, I bought Avid with the first cross-grade offer, hoping it would support my LHe card. So this is a blow. Can’t afford a new card just now, so anyone want to buy Avid 5.5 production bundle, unregistered? For price I paid, around £650? Even with the 6 upgrade cost I think this still works out cheaper than the current cross-grade price…. need to fund an Adobe upgrade now!

    Cheers, Ken.

October 11, 2011 at 1:01 pm in reply to: The missing Source Window

I spent many years editing on Media 100 with its single media window, so I was very used to this style of editing, switching between source and record in the same window, so I know it can be done. Despite this, when I switched to FCP it was a huge liberation having both source and record windows active at the same time, I could never go back.

I wonder what’s the logic behind one screen? Is it so the software can work more effectively on single screen systems, like the iMac range? To make room for all the metadata? Useful as it is, I’d rather edit from pictures than metadata….

    Ken.
