Thanks for that post. It pulled some strings. The original was shot HD 24p on a VariCam, then converted, pulled-down, and something else.

Seems like there was just too many conversions along the way. The final QT file we have is 720×480, Animation, millions of colors but it does show as interlaced in the QT player and various programs.

Trying to set the field order either way, blending etc doesn’t seem to matter..it either gets terribly interlaced or the wavy thing happens.

I think we just need to get the original stuff before all the converting happended!

The file source is a QuickTime with Animation compression.

It is interlaced when playing in the QT player (the source file) but it doesn’t show up at all when rendered.

Within the AE environment, it plays in RAM Preview, scrubbing etc and other renders work fine.. it’s just when we tried all the MPEG2 settings, it doesn’t show.

We probably will get the software but I want to know why the render from AE isn’t showing when in the working AE file, all does?

Thanks. Who mentioned Encore? Who mentioned doing Mpeg2 for dvd?

Those specs I put in the message were copied and pasted from their spec-sheet and is what our outsource guy has been providing. It’s MPEG2 for broadcast, a different animal than MEPG2 for dvd… like pecan versus apple pie… both are pies, but both are different.

Almost every spot we’ve done is really edited in After Effects with only basic stuff done in FCP, at least that’s what he told us and judging by the files we got from him, that’s at least his workflow.

Then again, when doing spots for BMW, Chevy and Ford, there is more eye candy needed for pop rather than storytelling but FCP is definitely the main baby.

Anyway, I’m just wondering why video isn’t showing up at all in the render and why the audio is screwed. That’s why I posted here in After Effects but provided all the other info just for background.

both… but here’s something that might help from the Lynda.com training videos:

the original AE file with the masks, select the Composition Settings and click the “Preserve frame rate when nested or in render que.”

That will force the nested comp to retain it’s original fps so that the mask keeps up with the footage.
(Maybe this is akin to what Aaron mentioned?)

Also, you might know this but if you set the frame rate to 59.94 and use the arrow keys to move through the comp, you get a better indication of what a render will look like. That’s all some math shit related to the pulldown being mixed with stuff created at 29.97

If that doesn’t do anything, then setting the Stretch on the layer to multiples of 80% might. 80% seems to be the magic number. If you have Twixter, it’s based on Speed which the numbers are as in the screen capture attached.

Now, those things were from AE 7 so I’m guessing they may still work the same in CS3.

are you using the latest AE? In 6.5, I get .mov when choosing the H.264 and in CS3 I get .mov?

The forum at 24-7media.de has a topic where users share psd.’s

But, you’ll be hard pressed to find someone to allow a really professional psd file for free or even for pay as that’s source, you know?

But, you just need to remember that the resolution needs to be 300 dpi at a 100% of the size for a good print to be made. Hopefully all the source your friend will provide will either all be high-res or clean prints so you can scan yourself.
