Theory: You could do a trim path on the animated path to draw a dot at that point in the path you want the shape to be at, render it out and track the point, then apply the tracking data to the shape. If shape alignment to path is needed, you could create two dots (of different color) near that same point and track them both to include rotation information.

    No probs.

Here’s a sample of how it looks with about 100 points/cells. Note that the placement and motion of the cells is random (wiggle), not based on any specific pattern.

    Voronoi

For a more controlled spawning of cells and faster rendering of higher number of cells, I would suggest using Particular or Form with faded spheres as particles with blending mode set to lighten (or darken, depending on whether they are black or white spheres.)

Now that you got me wondering whether this is possible in AE, the linked project shows a rough manual method of creating animated Voronoi patterns in AE.

Turning off the adjustments layers gives a better idea of what is going on. The adjustment layers are there to make the cell edges visible. The basic cell pattern is simply the closest distance to a point (in a set of points), the distance is represented here by a radial gradient (distance 0 = black, distance 1000 or so = white).

The patterns that are used in the video example you gave are Voronoi patterns. This is the only thing I found for AE that does anything vaguely similar:

I’m very glad you asked, for I didn’t realize this was added in the firmware update. I was happy enough to get audio level monitoring! Many other great improvements in the update: these extended ProRes options and the ability to format SSDs in-camera among them.

I see. So you need the two shapes to smoothly move from one position to the next while the words around them change.

How about creating the words with placehold characters with suitable spacing for the shapes such as bullet and asterisk with spaces on each side (” • ” and ” * “), then calculating the position of just those characters and animating the position of the shapes to match the positions of the bullet and the asterisk? You wouldn’t have to worry about spacing any of the characters in the words, just calculating those two locations in the consecutive words and animating the position of the shapes between them.

Perhaps I’m not understanding the problem, but why not just composite it in screen mode for all videos?

It is not an After Effects solution, but I would make this into a font with those shapes as characters, then you could type it in as text and everything else would be pretty straightforward.

I use Fontlab’s FontoGrapher but there are some free font creation programs that should do it as well:

September 24, 2015 at 8:54 am in reply to: Changing background – reflections

I’m thinking you could use one Particular layer (black and white, faded spheres) as a height map for the glass effect (or some other similar effect) that refracts a white-blue-black gradient like water, then use another copy of the same Particular effect (black and white, sharp edges) as a track matte to cut it out of the background.

A single layer will likely not create a convincing effect, you’ll need several, but that is the method I would try. It would make the particles mainly shades of blue, but have white highlights and dark shadows on the edges as well. (Although real water is colorless, we tend to regard water as “blue”.)

  • I believe adding the Effect directly to the text layer is the reason for the AO problem. And it’s just not the way Element is meant to be used. Similarly, you shouldn’t use a mask directly on the same layer where Element is, but use a track matte, if you want to mask something out.

I mean adding the plane primitive instead of the plane model. You are adding the plane model from the model library. This shouldn’t be a problem, but since there is a primitive for the same shape, I simply suggested it might be a better idea. Add it in the same Element instance, but from the Create menu:
