Yer thats done it, you are a genius!

    Thanks.

Whilst doing that, I noticed that there was another Apple ProRes setting labelled HQ, how does that differ from the non HQ one?

    Thanks again.

Yes you are correct, Im not suggesting that macs have somehow revolutionised editing. Both platforms have become astonishingly stable over the past decade and I thank Apple enormously for making the market a more competitive place as Im sure that has helped the progression.

One issue for Avid, I feel, is that they have to keep longer term users working with the systems today to see how stable they are and what they are capable of so we dont simply remember NT platform machines. For me thats mostly about pricing. Certainly in the UK I think Avid is hugely overpriced on the hardware side of things, in comparison to Blackmagic or AJA powered FCP suites. Im increasingly using FCP simply because they are cheaper for companies to kit out edit suites with.

In the UK an Avid with Adrenaline box with the HD option is still

Personally I feel that this is very much a left over from the PC editing world. I’ve edited on Avids for years and would suggest that they are only used for editing as they are way more sensitive in my experience.

I’ve personally not yet had problems related to installing other apps or using my machine for internet usage on my macs. I would agree with the theory that “clean” is best. As really we are talking about the old idea that if it aitn broke then dont fix it, the same is true of if it aint broke dont try to break it machines!

I think in theory its a good idea to keep your system clean but over the years I can honestly say that Ive had more problems from external hard drives, different versions of software, software updates and hardware conflicts than any problems realting to using a machine for more than just editing. So in practice I think we are currently still safe with FCP and Apple for multi purposing. I do agree that this may well change as Apple becomes more of a global brand though. The one good thing with Apple is that they are more likely to prodct test a large range of apps running along side and hardware running on the machine than 3rd part software manufacturers as its in their interest to solve any issues. 3rd party resellers are more likely to tell you to avoid a situation that might lead to conflicts are all cost as its not in their interest or control to change the problem.

    Hi,

Personally Id move the media onto a firewire drive with independant power adaptor. I’ve used mobile drives, small externals, USB and firewire, self powered and unpowered and I’ve never been 100 percent confident with USB self mobile drives. Even when they have worked perfectly as I suspect is the case for you, I’ve ended up running into problems at some point. In terms of lower cost drives I really cant say enough good things about G-Raids or for mobile the Lacie Porsche Firewire400 using USB power.

    Hope this helps

Im certainly not telling anyone to infronge copywright on their products, although personally I find it very grating that Apple dont offer the components for independant install as thats exactly what things like Flip4Mac are offering, and its all that FCP does to your version of QT when you install FCP, without any form of notification I might add.

My reasons for needing to try this is because of the backwards compatibility with FCP, if Apple didnt force this issue then there would be no need for work arounds.

Noah, on your warning of techical issues, quite what trouble you expect to run into by installing components in an extensions folder that are designed and made by Apple developers for this exact reason I dont know. Read developer info and you will find that this is common practice for building new video products that are to be used with QT architecture and it is much more risky to use 3rd party products than using Apple developed components in this way anyway, and that accounts for many plugins for mac in itself, what I shared with other readers of this site is that I moved Apples own components into a folder made for this process. If your suggestions are just go out and buy software and wait until it works then whats the point in half of the posts on this site?

    Hi,

Thanks Noah, Ive got it working by pasting the components from QT into the powerbook from another powerpc machine.

Basically QT 7.2 doesnt have the latest codecs that FCP6 uses, which seems a little silly of Apple to not include them for Pro users, as this is a real benefit.

So if anyone else has problems, just copy the components folder from any machine using the latest final cut onto your machine and QT can then act as a viewer for the files. Remember its power pc to power pc and intel to intel only!

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Are you sure about that price for the Multibridge, it is a good price for GBPs but I can order a brand new one from B and H in New York for 821GBPs.

If its the current version then I may consider making you an offer based on the above info!

    Cheers

I guess we should be grateful that it’s 2 manufactures working together for a change! Thank god this isn’t Ikegami or someone coming up with another ‘revoloutionary technology’.

    Hi,

I usually use the 1024 x 576 Composition setting in AE 6. 720.576 is the frame size of DV and 768×576 is the ‘FULL’ UK TV frame size for SD TV. If you want 16:9 version, yes they should be ananmorphic.

I’m sure you can adjust the project settings in AE if you are not sure.
