I haven’t done much that is too heavy in AE. It seems to be ok so far, except for an occasional pinwheel. I’m having a few problems with Premiere though.

    Hi Erin,

First of all as previously suggested you should try shooting in 24fps as that gives a more filmic and professional look. I think the biggest issue here is your lens. The kit lenses are pretty low quality glass, and rather slow. As a result you need to crank up your ISO in order to get appropriate exposure, which results in noise.

I don’t know what kind of video you mostly shoot, but a wise investment on solid glass would be a Sigma 30mm f/1.4. I bought it a while ago and for ~$500, you can’t get a better image. If you want to go even cheaper you can get the Canon 50mm f/1.8 for ~$100, just to see what it’s like to use fast lenses. Of course these will not be suitable for filming speeches as seen above, but as I said I don’t know what you usually shoot.

If you are weary about investing in a lens, you can always rent one pretty cheap for a day or two from borrowlens.com to test it out

To be honest “broadcast quality standards” is a relative term. Some things on broadcast look great, some look terrible. You are somewhat limited by shooting on a DSLR as they all shoot highly compressed footage that doesn’t room for much color correction. Regardless, if you light well you can still get really solid footage.

I’m not sure what lens you have now but if it is a kit lens, I would definitely recommend getting a 24-70 f/2.8. Good glass is just as important as a good camera (if not more).

June 30, 2014 at 5:00 pm in reply to: workflow for editing with 25/50/30 fps

If by “Full HD” you mean 1080p, I would avoid that as your 720p footage up-ressed will look terrible. If your final delivery is PAL, I would edit in 720p then just output the video to PAL standard upon final export. This can be done out of Premiere.

As far as your frame rate goes, I much prefer the look of 24 (or 25) compared to 30, but in this case I would probably go with 30 as that’s less conforming for the 50fps material. If you create a 30fps sequence and just drop the 50fps footage in there, I believe premiere will just drop one out of every few frames in order to make it fit. Then you can conform the 25 footage to 30, which will result in a slight pitch shift in the audio, which can be easily compensated with Premiere’s pitch shifter. I would make sure to keep all of the 25fps audio on it’s own track throughout the sequence, then you can just apply the pitch shifter to the audio track via the audio mixer.

I’m sure you’ve figured this out by this point, but it’s wise to think about your settings before you shoot, so that all your footage has the same look and you have much less technical problems in post.

The transition is clunky in awkward. But I’m confident that once you get PPro down, you will fly through edits

That’s a multicam sequence. If you hold command (ctrl on PC) while clicking, you should be able to open it in a sequence panel. If not, drag it into a sequence, then command click from there

I don’t know about those plugins, but if you are looking to do some morphing on the cheap you can try this technique:

Maybe just mask the area you want to transform?

June 26, 2014 at 6:55 pm in reply to: Editing Showreel – How does it work ?

Honestly the only editing reels I’ve ever really watched were from fellow students of mine in college, and yes they were mostly just music video style montages of all these pieces that they worked on, which I never really understood. It would seem to me that much longer reels that show the choices you made would be much better.

I believe one year during the Oscars when they listed the nominations for best editor they did a cool thing where they would play a clip and show 3 or 4 small windows displaying all the angles the editor had to chose from, then a big window above would show which angle s/he was choosing at that specific time. I felt like it was a pretty cool way to quickly show the editor’s decisions

I’ve never worked with MTS files, but I don’t see why you should need to export them first. Have you tried highlighting all necessary MTS files in the project bin, right-clicking, then clicking “Create multicam sequence”? If that doesn’t work, put each MTS file in its own sequence, then highlight all those sequences in the project panel and try the same steps.
