The first graphics machine I worked on was a Quantel Paintbox. The bare 10 inch platters were, if I remember correctly, 335mb (that’s Megabytes!). Of course we were working in standard definition, putting graphics to one inch and Beta SP, so file size was fairly manageable. I still have a few of the bare platters kicking around my office for curiousity sake.

These have been around on an industrial scale for a long time. I wrote a documentary for AT&T back in the late eighties about a “hot slide”, the process of moving a digital telephone switcher into place while it was running (to replace the old electro-mechanical switcher). They built a separate building onto the main telephone exchange, installed the new switcher, got it up and running, and then “slid” it into place while it was handling thousands of phone calls. The switcher was riding on fiberglass rails, under which these industrial level air shims were pumped up, and slid on low friction pucks. It was amazing to see! (and film) It’s nice to see the technology filter down to a smaller scale. Great idea!

Here’s a book worth owning:
https://books.google.com/books/about/Digital_Painting_in_Photoshop.html?id=_xKBK6-ncH0C
It covers the topic exhaustively. Look for a used copy if you can find one. They can be had inexpensively on various used book sites, and *Bay.

I did just such a project several years ago with multiple vintage TVs. They were non-functional. Look around your area, and you may be surprised at the collectors you might find who are willing to rent or loan the TVs to you for your project. I’m in the boonies of NH, and I was able to find a collector and, for a fee, borrow several TVs for a week. I put markers on the outer glass of the TVs, and then tracked the camera moves (using Combustion at the time, which had a great tracker). It worked beautifully.
