Maybe not quite as direct as on the PC (just different, I guess), but it is possible:

    Neil –

You have to understand that the people here who are calling others stupid or behind the times have a dog in the race. Anyone who earns money on the back of an NLE (not as an editor, mind you) has something to gain monetarily by getting the most people who need training, or third party stuff, etc. on the FCX bandwagon. You won’t find the people who man the Koolaid stand bad-mouthing the Kool-aid…

  • You should be able to just use the ascii code for the en-dash using your number pad.
Just hold down the alt key and type 0150 on the number pad (make sure num lock is on). It should work. For an m-dash hold down the alt key and type 0151 on the number pad.

And as Dave could also tell you, if you’ve ever worked in NTSC color for broadcast, you quickly realize that the acronym means “Never the same color”. Browser color matching is even worse! How many home (or even business) users do you know who calibrate their monitors? Colors will vary, and monitors will vary, and if you’re working for a client who wants their logo colors matched, you have to make it clear to them up front that all bets are off when it leaves the view on your monitor.

One thing to bear in mind if you should decide to purchase CT3, is deciding which version you need:

I initially purchased the Pro version, then discovered that I really needed the Pipeline Version, because of my need to import custom characters from Photoshop. Support at Reallusion was great, and they allowed me to “crossgrade” to the version I needed without losing anything on the deal. They are helpful, and the software does stuff that no other package can do. Have fun with it!

    Bill –

The overarching rule in the corporate world has always been adapt or die. The overarching rule in the creative world will always be “Do the best work you can with the tools you are comfortable with.” There are still successful artists doing paper collage, shooting with 8 x 10 film cameras, with 35 and 16mm film cameras, even pinhole cameras, for God’s sake! The only people who are trying to sell the Adapt or Die! mantra are the people who are making money on the latest “you have to use this or you’re not talented!” software, hardware, or technology.

Not saying you can’t achieve what you want with DUIK, but talk a look at CrazyTalk Animator 3 (you can download a free demo to try it out), and you’ll find some capabilities which would quicken the workflow, and stuff you would spend weeks on in AE that can be achieved in hours using CT3. I have no affiliation with CrazyTalk, I’m just a user who has been very impressed with its’ capabilities:

  • I purchased mine quite some time ago on *Bay. I’ll bet you can still find copies of it (legitimate ones which haven’t been registered with Adobe) there.

In the late 80s and early 90s I was producer and on-air reviewer of computer hardware and software on a show called PCTV Live!. I was lucky enough to be sent a demo of the NeXT – I can’t remember whether it was the NeXT workstation or the NeXTcube, but it was a wondrous piece of hardware, especially given the technology at the time. The graphical user interface was what really blew us away! If you want to have a look at screenshots and product brochures from the time, here’s a good link:
