  • Can I make an en-dash in Premiere’s Titler?

Posted by Leonard Frankford on May 24, 2018 at 3:56 pm

A client recently asked me to use an en-dash instead of a hyphen in a title recently. I had never even heard of an en-dash. She gave me instructions on how to make it in Word. I tried using the option/alt key and number code in the titler to make the dash but it didn’t work (we have to use Gil Sans in our shop). I explained to her that the titler is not a word processor and that whatever works for Word doesn’t work for Premiere. She is willing to live with the standard hyphen, but is there a way to make an en- (or even an em-) dash in Premiere? And why does anyone care?

Good question .. would a workaround be to copy from Word and paste, and is that possible?

It might work. I have copied/pasted from Word before into the Titler. In this case the client didn’t type anything beforehand; I just tried to make it myself. But I can try copying it from a document.

You should be able to just use the ascii code for the en-dash using your number pad.
Just hold down the alt key and type 0150 on the number pad (make sure num lock is on). It should work. For an m-dash hold down the alt key and type 0151 on the number pad.

Is there a number lock key on a Mac? I don’t see one.

    Leonard –

Maybe not quite as direct as on the PC (just different, I guess), but it is possible:
