As Lorenzo said, taking a sample of the noise floor is the way to go. This is just a sample of the factory noise when the speaker is not talking. Then remove this sample from the whole audio clip, but just enough so it still sounds “real”. You don’t want all of the background noise to go away.

September 16, 2012 at 11:29 pm in reply to: Vector or not vector, that is the question

Something many graphic artists don’t understand is that just because a file is saved in Illustrator, it’s not necessarily a vector-based file. I’ve requested vector-based artwork from people, and had the same nasty looking results, only to find that the person thought all you had to do was open or import a bit-mapped file into Illustrator, and save it as an eps or ai file, and it was now vector-based. This is not the case, and it may be what you’re dealing with.

You don’t say whether you’re working on a 64-bit system. This could be critical to any answer.

Sorry Roberto – That’s called refraction, and I’ll have to think about that one. One way you might achieve it is to use a distortion map masked into just the area that’s showing in the layer that’s in front. I’m going to think about this and get back to you.

You also don’t say which version of AE you’re working with, so the solutions may vary – CS6 has added some powerful features.

Nice design, Tim! I don’t think you could build a better one for that price.

I would think that using depth of field in your camera would achieve what you’re looking for.

September 15, 2012 at 1:54 am in reply to: Title zooming effect

My first thought is to use vector-based text (from Illustrator), and turn on the “constant rasterize” switch in the composition. This will keep the zoomed in text edge from completely aliasing, without forcing you to create really hi-rez graphics to keep the zoom-ins crisp looking.

  • I’d take a look at using Adobe Bridge to help manage and track your assets. It has a feature called “Collections”, which allows you to browse and “collect” materials from multiple folders and drives without having to duplicate them.

Here’s a link to an article I wrote a while back for the COW Magazine:

    https://magazine.creativecow.net/article/managing-broadcast-assets-with-adobe-bridge

There might also be some use for an offline cataloguing package so tht you can have a log of what footage is on which drive without having them mounted/attached. I’m currently using Gentibus CD on Windows 7 to catalog everything from network drives to CDs and DVDs. It allows me to have the contents of everything on my computer without having to insert the disks, or have the network drives running.

  • Hi Bryan –

I’m a PC guy, but I think you might find the contents of this page most enlightening – at least they should lead you to a solution:

    https://macperformanceguide.com/Optimizing-AfterEffects.html

While 32GB of RAM should most certainly improve your speed, the fact that a reboot speeds things up leads me to believe there’s something else going on. Good luck!

September 12, 2012 at 7:01 pm in reply to: Removing Part of a Shape Layer for 3d Shatter Effect

I suggest you take the element into Photoshop or Illustrator, make the cut there, and save it out as a .png or .psd file. Short of that, you might just be able to pre-comp the layer with the mask on it, then apply the Shatter effect.
