  • Removing Part of a Shape Layer for 3d Shatter Effect

Posted by Ryan Stubbs on September 12, 2012 at 6:39 pm

I am currently working on a project which involves 3d text. I am using the shatter plugin to do this. The text is also accompanied by a 2/3 circle accent around the first capital letter (I’m mimicking the Avengers logo). I created a circle using the shape tool, then masked it to create the shape I wanted. However, the Shatter Effects ignores the mask and makes the entire circle 3d. How do I completely remove the part of the layer that is masked, not just hide it with a mask? Any help you can offer is appreciated.

I suggest you take the element into Photoshop or Illustrator, make the cut there, and save it out as a .png or .psd file. Short of that, you might just be able to pre-comp the layer with the mask on it, then apply the Shatter effect.

Thanks for the tip! The pre-comp worked perfectly. I can’t believe I didn’t think of doing that.
