As a matter of curiousity, how is the license controlled? Serial number keyed to the GPU? Dongle? Other?

Good to see you back on the Frequently Answered Questions list.
How is that fine-tuned specifications and operator description brochure coming?

Nice shirt, by the way. I could make it red or blue, if you’d like…

[Jamie Allan] ” why would you use color when running resolve?) “
    I’m assuming this is a winky, but…

Quite a few reasons, actually. I won’t argue toolsets or app-specific features, but there is a workflow and NLE/layered sequence interchange that COLOR/FCP has that will be very difficult to emulate. Otherwise, we’re back to tape-to-tape and the “baked” timeline approach, although server’ed and random access (and that is a good thing). Still, experience is jabbing me in the shoulder with its little pitchfork saying that 90% of all grading is Primary and move on the clock is ticking and you don’t need all that fancy stuff… except where the real magic starts occurring… and we all know, of course, that the real grade is happening in “wet-ware”, and has nothing to do with machines at all.

[michael stirling] “The final head scratch for me now is checking that my FCS set will still work correctly with a GTX285 in there as I need it all to run on 1 system “

Although there may be some wildly ingenious method for doing that, at first blush it would appear to be unrealizable.

We are all aware of COLOR’s antipathy for nVidia for starters (including no support for 10-bit), and the fact that COLOR will not even boot if there is more than one active GPU, where BM Resolve needs two, minimum. There are a lot of conflicts and not just little ones. If you’re a major-league configuration expert, no problem… but it’s not on my bucket list. Two systems, possibly two rates.

But, saying that, I am being urged to start gearing up for some 3D projects which would moot all of this, since the MacOS appears to be a non-starter in that category.

So the Linux version… only works with the dedicated controller, is that right?

[Jack Jones] “Take for example adding a shape, just a circular one. You have to add a node layer, select the shape and then activate it. 3 buttons on the full panel to access a single feature. Didn’t really like that the panel required a mouse for a large amount of it but hey ho.

Which raises the question for me… every single release of the daVinci interface up to this point has offered a “macro” instruction recording mode, which was really good for the old mantra “[static]-[-1]-[preview]-[dissolve] to patch up an auto-dynamic that didn’t copy, among other repetitive tasks. So is there no “macro” instruction cache in Resolve? Even if it created or recalled the steps to add nodes and layers, it would be a good starting point.

Also with regards to the end-of-life estimation of the 285 versus the Quadro4800, there would also appear to be a fairly huge price difference between the two, which might become a factor and cause an operator to want to precisely define their requirement to justify the investment. I know my purchase of a 4500 a couple of years ago was a total waste of money, and I couldn’t get an ATI1900XT fast enough to cover the mistake. Luckily the ATI card was cheap enough to minimize the damage.

At any rate, I’m starting to acquire a few bits of this and that — I have no experience with BM products other than what I’ve encountered on other peoples’ systems. So, for starters, an HDLink Pro3D Display port.
If it does everything on the brochure, it will become my fake “Northlight Truelight” LUT box and combination SDI–> surround sound monitor. In some categories, there are some areas where Blackmagic is way ahead of AJA. It might just be a detail, but… this is a game of micro-meters sometimes.

    And so the adventure begins.

I’m presently exactly in the same situation with an AVID-AVC-I origination wanting to make the trip into COLOR.

The Duck AAF method, trying to import media, results in a timeline populated with Duck’s “offline” placeholder with the advisory that I’m trying to reference media that AD doesn’t understand. There are also some interesting file hierarchy hurdles.

Next plan is to try the 10-bit Uncompressed route, whether its a baked show that we use the Duck imported sequence for a razor guide, or some other magical relinking Log and Transfer, then Reconnect, approach.

Starts making me favour the Resolve…

I love spirited debate. That’s probably the whole reason..
Now, then… I’m actually one of those people who owns a business, too and I probably owe the business, such as it is, to the whole desktop revolution, and the parallels with desktop publishing are not lost on me.

I could have been more precise in my response, since it is not your personal credibility that I attach the conditionality to… its the whole chaotic mess that we are now in. I doubt that even a theoretical astrophysicist could figure out the business model as it now “stands”.

    Oh, where to begin.
[Eddie Kesler] “DaVinci is not proprietary anyway.”

But up to this point, it sure has been. We operated our Renaissance with the doors (on the core processor) open for years because they wouldn’t close anymore because of all the jumper-mod wiring spilling out the front. There were no consumer-useable/serviceable parts in the frame, anywhere. There were a couple of ASICS that if they went… it was just a pile of silicon.

That the Mac/Linux version of Resolve runs on a specially-qualified, but otherwise commodity platform
still doesn’t exactly exempt it from a proprietary-like category.

[Eddie Kesler] “By the way, I’m not a “wanna be” colorist. We have a professional colorist who’s worked all over the world interested in joining us for this venture.”

So we would gather that you are not a colorist at all, then.
And in a three paragraph entry, there were eight grammatic conditionals… sometimes two in a phrase.
Wouldn’t say I’d be overwhelmed with confidence in the package, maybe, possibly, not… eventually, though… if…..

[Margus Voll] “I wonder what hardware does Revival need?
We probably plan to get one here but i have not seen much information on that.
    Maybe i have not looked hard 😉 ? “

    Now this is too funny…

After posting that okay, this is no social club, and maybe you’ll need to tweak your hardware a little bit…

you write ….. so what does it need? (!)

Yes, I think you need to look a little harder.

You will find that the entry-level Mac Resolve software is, while still a fraction of what Final Touch was initially offered, still more than the average plug-in. And it does have some very specific requirements, at least in the initial offering… and at first blush, appear to be exactly the opposite of what Apple wants for COLOR, and there isn’t enough room in this Mac for the both of them. But my feeling is that the market will determine just how port-able it becomes. The vast majority of the readership here, although shocked at the price of a legitimate grade monitor, somehow still has the impression that a Resolve is going to appear on their laptops with very little fuss, and you know the drill… tomorrow, the world! and etc.

Conveniently forgetting that the real big iron is still out there and actually is still a Linux/proprietary solution. And in a price category that there is no way on gods green earth that they would ever have paid or would have been able to justify if it were called Silicon Color Final Touch. Because color grading was really just a nicety that frankly wasn’t that high a priority for them.

I still like the idea, though; its a wonderful toolset, but it isn’t going to keep me from building the house with what I have– and re-inventing the wheel is simply not on my to-do list.
