Could you tell me whether running only Vegas on your system solved all your problems? I have the same problem. That’s why I am interested.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply. It sounds hopeful. I thought I had to switch to W10 for two reasons:
– system requirements list Windows 10
– I installed Vegas Pro 17 on my Windows 7 system, but it won’t open/run. Then I changed ssd’s to one with Windows 10 on it, installed SVP17 again. Now it does run, with no hardware changes. What could be the reason why it won’t run on Windows 7 but will on Windows 10?
So why do I think I need a new computer when SVP17 runs on my current system?
I have had issues with running Vegas Pro 12 for years now. I disabled gpu use, clean up the project bin, but still have trouble with playback/preview, rendering and audio. Playback is often interrupted, sometimes not even possible. Rendering only completes succesfully with no or very little previous actions. This is why I thought I needed a major upgrade in system speed and memory, with close attention to gpu capability.Does it really not matter much what the system consists of, as long as it is fast?

Tried Handbrake. I can find no preset that exactly matches my project settings, but chose H.264 MKV 1080p30 and after 20 minutes got a 414Mb file outof the 2.09Gb original. That makes no sense to me and is worse than the still unacceptable picture I get from AVC. The original quicktime movie looks fine. The converted file is compressed way too much.

Even with the proposed settings the result is disappointing. The mp4 file is half the size of the original quicktime movie, and it shows. I’ll try Handbrake next.
Although I have replaced the quicktime movie from the smartphone with a converted mp4 file, other video events which posed no problems before are affected. In many places on the timeline other images than that of the selected video event are visible in the preview window, often with problems like noise, flickering, shifted colors and general degredation. The problem with the smartphone video seems to be taken care of, but now the rest seems to randomly quit on me. Among these are mp4 files shot with video cameras.
How can I get the project to behave like it did before? -
Hi Dimitrios,
gpu video acceleration is off by default. I start up all my projects with it off. I had trouble because of this option before, so I leave it off now.
To George:
the original file is over 2Gb, the converted file is 376 Mb, so no wonder it looks like shit. I chose high quality, 2 pass conversion and hd. Should I use other software, or am I doing something wrong? -
Hi George,
Yep, that was the problem! Many thanks. I installed Any Video Converter, and with the new file it will render. One little drawback: the image quality has gone down from hd to sd, although AVC says it is hd. And the image has been cropped. I tried converting it to m2t, but although Vegas can supply that format as output, it doesn’t work using it for input. Which format should I use to get the best result?

Thanks for replying.
All files are on the same internal hard disk, which is not the one SVP12 is on (that is an ssd).
The file that gives me the most problems, is one from a smartphone camera. It’s in portrait mode hd. I can get it on the time line no problem, it also appears and plays in the preview window now, but it just won’t render, no matter what I try.
When I frame it in landscape mode for my project, the image sometimes doesn’t appear in the crop window. Only a solid red frame. During rendering the preview turns black. Sometimes the rendering proces ends in an error message, sometimes it takes forever and I end it, sometimes it says it’s finished but the rendered file doesn’t play and won’t be accepted by SVP, sometimes it plays but the screen is black.
A few years back I used hd shot with a smartphone in SVP12 and had no problems. But then I didn’t try and fit it in a standard hd project (landscape format). -
Thanks for the answer to my question.
How do I confirm whether SVP12 was optimised for 4K? -
I forgot to mention that I use SVP12. Sorry.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I must admit assuming the field order is wrong because of this banded image of what I figure to be the next field. I have seen it elsewhere, even had it myself once or twice. But that was long ago, with SVP8. All I know is that then I started changing field order, format and interpolation, and at some point the problem was gone. Not so this time around.Fidgeting some more, pointed towards preview settings by you, I found that the problem disappears with preview quality at “preview half” or less. Anything higher, and there are these bands again. Don’t know why this happens on and off. Because recently I have edited shots from the same camera on the same system with preview at a higher setting, without this banding problem. And why would this sometimes go away with some odd settings?
During rendering the bands sometimes appear again. The rendered video is fine. I should have checked that. Sorry.
Here are the settings with which the banding disappeared yesterday, but appeared again today:
media properties: maintain aspect ratio, smart resample, uff, square pixel aspect
project properties: 1920×1080 24fps, uff, HDV1080 pixel aspect, interpolate fieldsI did however get broad black bands on either side of the image which is 16:9. When I changed back to HD 1080-50i, which is the format the video was shot in, I get the described problem, but the black bands on either side are gone. Deinterlace remained at interpolate. Whether in this mode, blend fields, or none, the problem stayd.
I also tried changing the resample setting, field order, or fps. Nothing else seems to work.Standard practice for me is to (pre)view on a tv. The problem looks harsher on a computer monitor, but that’s due to resolution, I gather. I have now turned on the deinterlace filter for the preview device.
Anyway: the problem seems to be with previewing only. I would like to be able to use a higher preview quality now and again. Any idea on why my computer would frustrate this?
