The best advice? “Be the Avid”.
In the same way Media100 is unique, Avid is unique and has it’s own quirks and methodology. The best DVD’s I’ve seen are at Avid’s website – click on training and navigate to the store. There is a basics DVD, FX and Color Correction DVDs. A must have book is Steve Bayes most excellent book ‘The Avid Handbook’ at Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Avid-Handbook-Intermediate-Techniques-Information/dp/0240805534).
You might also try posting at the Avid forum on the main COW site to find Media100 folks who made the transition.

I really like the Avid discs (https://www.avidstore.com/us/index.cfm?page=templates/product_index&categoryid=42). I’ve also got a disc (for the life of me, I can’t remember who puts it out)on Marquee. Steve Bayes has what many consider THE book on the Avid (https://www.amazon.com/Avid-Handbook-Intermediate-Techniques-Information/dp/0240805534). It’s full of info – everytime I pick it up, I learn or remember something.

Are you near New York? I’d find a local reseller and buy from them – that way, you have a better chance of someone coming to your system, instead of sending your system to someone… Of course, either way you’ll probably won’t have many problems…

A Meridian is a totally different boardset/CPU everything… It originally came with a G3 (I went the Mac route), Meridian box and a digidesign audio box.
Why not just go to an XPress Pro? You’ll get better quality than your ABVB, and you’ll get much quicker performance. The Meridian only works with a G4 (I don’t know how far you can go in a PC – maybe an 8200?) – additionally, the quickest SCSI throughtput you’ll get is 160mbs. I’m pretty sure you can’t use FW drives. The bottom line is the Meridian is an exceptionally stable box, but it’s age is showing. I’ve upgraded mine to a G4, OSX (10.2.6) and ver 12 – there is no longer an upgrade path for the meridian box.
If you are really intent on going to the Meridian, I’m sure you can find a used one on ebay or a reseller…

This is where your personal media management habits will come into play. If you’ve kept all your ‘graphics’ (I include still photos, motion graphics – anything you imported into projects) in one place, just copy to an external media drive/disc. If you’ve been a little careless with your original source files, you will have to hunt for each one. This is only an issue if you need to re-import media. Your Avid has created it’s own media and stored it on your media drives.
As long as your media is on external drives it’s really no problem. If you’ve used your system drive (and most people have saved an effect or two there), look for a folder called ‘OMFI files’. Open the folder and delete the media database files (there will be two – .msm & .mdb) and the ‘creating’ folder. Then copy ALL the media to an external drive – prefereably your media drive ‘OMFI folder’. It’s a good idea at this point to delete your media database files on your media drive as well. (if you have any media whose file name starts with a ‘+’, you can delete that as well – it’s corrupted)
-Go to your Applications folder (assuming you’ve put your software there), find the Avid folder. If you want your personal settings, (the folder is called whatever your settings are called) copy it to a disc. Don’t worry about site settings – I’m assuming you’re going through all this because something is screwy on your system. You also need to copy your project files to a disc. THIS IS KEY!!!!! It should be in a folder called ‘Avid Projects’. Copy the whole folder.
-Rebuild your hard drive.
-Reinstall your Avid software
-Copy your project files back to your hard drive. You should put it back in the same place, for the sake of argument.
-Start your Avid software. You will see, in addition to the start up scripts, a white box saying ‘scanning media drives’. This is Avid finding out where everything is. It may take a long time, depending on how much media you have.
Viola’! Yor are ready to rock and or roll. Keep in mind, your media is key. Deleting the media database files forces the Avid to reasess what it has on the media drives. You may have an effect or two offline, but a quick render should fix that.

Are you looking to teach on this PC or just learn? If you are teaching, I’d definitly use what Avid recommends (https://www.avid.com/products/xpresspro/specs.asp#pc).
If you are trying to learn, then I’d suggest getting as close to the specs as possible. Keep in mind, you’ll need firewire; You won’t be able to capture footage via USB, unless it’s P2 (which is more of a transfer process).

With the caveat that you need to be careful of feedback, of course you can. I’ve got a Mackie 1402, Soundcraft 200b and a soundcraft Delta AVE hooked up to my Avids. Esentially, the mains feed the speakers, the Avid out feeds two of the busses. I’ve got a beta and a router input filling out the rest of the inputs.
