    Hi,

We have purchased AVID Xpress Pro w/Mojo (PC) for our studio. We have worked on Media 100i for many years — and have stayed with v7.5 on OS9 rather than upgrade.

I did not anticipate the AVID learning curve I have experienced. I can’t seem to wrap my mind around the interface, timeline navigation — the basics, and I keep going back to Media 100i for “just this project . . . ” I really must master the AVID Xpress.

Can anyone suggest a good basic DVD training series, and good books, to learn from the ground up? I’d especially love to hear from anyone who has transitioned from Media 100, on which I am very comfortable. Thanks so much.

The best advice? “Be the Avid”.

In the same way Media100 is unique, Avid is unique and has it’s own quirks and methodology. The best DVD’s I’ve seen are at Avid’s website – click on training and navigate to the store. There is a basics DVD, FX and Color Correction DVDs. A must have book is Steve Bayes most excellent book ‘The Avid Handbook’ at Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Avid-Handbook-Intermediate-Techniques-Information/dp/0240805534).

You might also try posting at the Avid forum on the main COW site to find Media100 folks who made the transition.

Good Luck! Don’t hesitate to post back here if you need help!

Thank you so much — yes, it’s like learning a new language — it just that, for now, it feels like trying to write with my left foot!

I will look into all you suggested — is the DVD you mentioned on basics different than the tutorial that ships with the system )the Saturn commercial with the “chicken salesman)? I also wonder if you have any thoughts on Steve Bayes’ DVD through DMTS — “Inside AVID.”

Thank you again for your help with the transition.

One other question, if I may: any recommendations on the book Avid Xpress Pro Power! by Steve Julin?https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1592001513/ref=pd_cp_b_title/102-6663452-2436145

    Thanks again

If Steve wrote it, it’s good. I sat in on a training session once and he’s really got a knack for making things seem easy. I’m not sure about the other book. The training video is not the rehash of the tutorial – it’s good in depth information starting from the beginning.

    Hi,

Wonder if you have any advice seeing as I’m going through the same trauma as yourself!

After 8 years of using Media 100 I now have to learn to use Avid, it seems terribly over complicated but I’ve got no choice in the matter!

Did you have any more useful advice in addition to the posts replying to your note on Creative Cow?

Any help would be gratefully received – even if it’s just to say you got over it!!

    Kind regards

    Alex
