[Chaz Shukat] “Also, did you know that one keyframe provides 100% of the daily requirements of 7 essential vitamins and minerals? ;)”
I knew there was a reason I’d gained weight. Now I can have all the doughnuts I want. Pesky keyframes…

[Reagan] “Has anyone worked with Panasonic AJSDX900 + firewired”
Do you mean firewire from the 900 into the deck, or firewire out of the deck into AXP?
At the very least, firewire would be an option out of the camera – it’s not standard, and with the quality of the 900, I’m not sure I’d want firewire out.
According to this link, (https://www.avid.com/content/6844/DVDeviceQual_9_12_04.htm), it doesn’t look like the deck you want is supported by the AXP system. Of course, I’m using an ‘unsupported’ deck (the Pannie AJ-SD930B), controlled via RS422… Your milage may vary…

Sony doesn’t support the SP format anymore. Any spare parts you might need are rapidly drying up. I would think you’d want to buy the minimum format required by your customers. Can any of them accept DV? As far as SDI v. Firewire, I’m not sure – anyone?

I’ve heard one of our computer admin folks say if your admin settings get corrupted, it’s a lot harder to recover. We’ve used admin settings at the OS level on all 3 (1 Mac and 2 PC’s) of our Avids for years now, and have never had a problem. If you desire, create a new user in the OS. You should be able to open your projects with no problem.

Please take your caps lock off – it’s considered yelling.

Export out of the Avid as a QT Reference. We used PremierePro as an intermediate program to encode to mpeg. Then we discovered we could burn directly to DVD using PPro. Then we discovered a bug (for the life of me I can’t remember what it was), and we started using Sorenson and Reel DVD. All of our stuff is first play – no authoring necessary.

[Chaz Shukat] “why get FCP? That’s a totally professional package”
sorry, should have said FCP Express.
iMovie is a cool package to – I’d forgotten about that one!Bottom line is your spending an awful lot of money to do home movies. Are you thinking of getting into the video buisness at some point?

Thanks, Tim. That’s what I was looking for. They’ll be sitting in a studio feeding a component video switcher. I guess the only problem now is what they’ll look like sitting on big Vinten studio dollys with full size telepromters. It should be rather humorous – maybe I’ll post pix!

Well, the biggest difference I can think of off hand is Marquee in title tool, and possibly a more robust multicam.
I guess my question now is, if all you are going to do is home movies, why invest such a large chunk on Avid. Since your on a Mac, why not go with Final Cut Pro? You won’t have as many hardware issues (Avid is very picky regarding hardware configuration), and from what I’ve heard (I’ve not had the opportunity to use FCP) the export option is more seamless than Avid’s. It’s cheaper, too.
Just a thought…Jon
